Since there's a new YGO movie releasing next month here in the west, I thought it would be cool to dump the original manga which the movie is based off of. For those of you who only ever watched the anime, I highly recommend reading the manga as it's much darker and better written than the anime was imo. There's also none of the fillers you have to deal with. Since the movie is releasing on Jan 27, 2017, I will dump one volume a day leading up to its release.
Today we continue Memory World in volume 33.
I really hated Diabound, it was beyond retarded
>HURR DURR NOTHING KILLS HIM, HE GETS SPECIFIC NEW SKILLS TO FUCK YOU UP AND IS ALWAYS STRONGER
sorry but that was bullshit
the time reverse thing with Ra was also really bad
The true events are significantly darker, for one. From what we know - and have seen in flashbacks - Priest Kaiba actually mounts a coup, fueled entirely by a "Fuck you, Pharaoh!" at the worst possible moment. (You can see them fighting in the Kaiba versus Yugi duel.)
Basically everyone and everything was fucked until the Pharaoh forced a stalemate by using the Millenium Puzzle. This means that he outright killed Kaiba and THEN had to fight Zorc. (Remember, the landscape's an apocalyptic mess at the time of the Priest Kaiba versus Pharaoh duel.)
In fact, Thief Bakura probably wasn't remotely important or even an actual character. The true story is how one stupid asshole got corrupted by greed, envy and the promise of power then fucked everyone forever.
I think it's implied that most events up to the fight with Ra happened, then it goes completely off the rails. The Thief King was still probably insignificant, but paved the way to the real problem.
I thought that was Atem's re-interpretation of events, while the Memory Tablet was initially, well, just a repository of Atem's memories. Everything's distorted here because they're actually playing D&D, not watching a replay of historical events.
Things obviously ended very, very badly the first time. And isn't it Seto who sacrifices Kisara, instead of his dad doing it, in the actual events? Since it's a completely different situation when he's kneeling in front of the tablet, as compared to Kaiba's vision of the past when fighting Marik's sister.
This, right there, means the kingdom is fucked.
Like, we already know that the only reason why this kingdom lasts is because the King and his Priests can summon goddamn monsters if push comes to shove. But a single thief has more firepower than six of them combined, and only the absolute ruler of the land can stop him.
You're taking this too calmly, guys. This is like the American people finding out that ISIS has nuclear bombs.
What's weird is that Atem himself never seems to have a ka. Yes, he gets Dark Magician later, but technically it's not *his*. I don't think we ever see the one that belongs to him the way Duos belongs to Kaiba.
Other than the Clown, Kaiba didn't really have other noteworthy monsters since he kept switching up his deck. Most of the others were one offs, and Blue Eyes was used for a different purpose in the manga, so it couldn't be his.
No, just two. The spirit and Thief Bakura are the same entity, just like Yugi's alter-ego and Atem.
They look slightly different because they adapt to the host's body, which already looks like them to begin with.
Ring confirmed for most malevolent of Millennium Items before Bakura even got his hands on it.
Runner-up goes to Millennium Eye, which shows an illusion of what you want before sending you into a spiraling descent to ruin.
the game so far is garbage, you rely on equip spells most of the time to steam over the opponents
also, holy shit, the NPC you play to grind are beyond retarded
>I SUMMON A SHIT MONSTER WITH 100 ATTACK IN ATTACK POSITION
Teamkilling the Ka leaves the priests vulnerable as they can't summon another spirit fast enough. Bakura goes for the objective and steals the Items/kill priests before running away.
Then Bakura runs away, comes back next Tuesday claiming his hatred made Diabound grow three sizes bigger that day, and this time you have less powerups.
a little bit of more challenge and giving you actual good rewards for the duels would be welcome
the 3 booster sets so far have literal garbage cards save some interesting tidbits
They do start setting monsters after Lv10 difficulty though it's still easy to steamroll them. Equip spells on beatsticks to steamroll is pretty accurate to the old school playstyle for better or worse. We have a good number of 1500-1700ATK monsters right now but the lack of 2000DEF monsters and basic destruction like Trap Hole and Man Eater Bug is a little jarring
honestly, i just want a GOOD but official dueling phone app
duel links is cool, I do like the speed format, but i wish it was also possible to have a full duel, as well as construct my own deck (i know you can buy cards, but bleh)
I imagine it isn't as fun to write Slifer duels.
>Player has to keep using draw cards
>Opponent can't do combos using monsters weaker than 2000 ATK
A 4000 ATK giant is just simpler.
That ends volume 33. Tomorrow we continue in volume 34.
Huh, in the local translated version here the top right panel of this left page was accusing her of being the reason the army had invaded their town, not trying to summon said army to capture her.
>doesn't know hes famous
but...how, you're playing a game bakura
watch your mouth, Marik is best boy.
I think since Marik wasn't the "rightful" owner of the Rod, maybe thats why he didn't get a past version? Iirc Isis was supposed to have her item, so it makes sense I think
>>152472633 here, and in this bottom left panel he says something along "You attack this woman because of the difference in skin color?" and not "defenseless woman". Small things, but I'd prefer to trust the translations of my local volumes since they have a tendency to make direct translations for better or for worse.
maybe we can write to Kaz and he'll fulfill our desires.
What is he doing these days?
Osirus and Ra are the more interesting and entertaining gods; but Obelisk is way simpler to use, yeah.
Its also a funny change of pace for Atem to use the "easy" god, given that usually Atem is pulling all sorts of bullshit.
Osirus is my favorite, i just recently bought the legal TCG card. ...Too bad the game has changed a whole lot and this XYZ and pendulum bullshit makes all the old cards I have and know irrelevant lol
Loyalty to kingdom first. As long as Atem is making appropriately ruthless decisions while keeping honour intact, he obeys. Too much mercy or wanton cruelty, and he defects.
Also, Atem in the original plans had something to do with Kisara's death, which sparked the budding desire to defect. Or maybe it was just Kaiba's hubris biting him in the ass, and the requested reinforcements from from Atem came too late/did nothing. We'll never know.
>Also, Atem in the original plans had something to do with Kisara's death,
is there a place to read about the original plans?
Atem being related to Kisara's death would make more sense i think, but then again, the story we got was super redacted.
They should make a fucking movie about this arc and Kaz can use the original plans or something
>As long as Atem is making appropriately ruthless decisions while keeping honour intact, he obeys. Too much mercy or wanton cruelty, and he defects.
how ruthless do you think Atem was?
'"Dark Yugi" can be pretty cruel, but Egyptian Atem seems like a really sweet guy
Malay. I had only started collecting the volumes from Yugi VS Pegasus onwards so these threads have been nice to go through for the Duelist Kingdom arc which I had only watched the anime of.
The original plans are in the afterword of the volumes.
Also, I misremembered. Seto agrees with Akhenaden that Atem isn't ruthless enough to rule Egypt. Then Kisara got tortured to death by Akhenaden while he invited Seto to join in.
Which naturally leads Seto to try and strike down Hank II, and Hank became High Priest of Darkness. Seto goes nuts and either becomes Batman or leads his own army against everyone else.
Egyptian Atem isn't as cynical as Dark Yugi, who had to sit through OTL. Fighting against Seto can lead to some slippery slopes if you don't have Monster Reborn.
>Pot of Waifu: Excavate cards from the top of your Deck until you excavate a Waifu that can be Normal Summoned/Set. Special Summon that Waifu. Return all other excavated cards to the Deck and shuffle it.
I expected Bakura to be a more prominent villain
instead we got this cockmonster thing
>What is he doing these days?
Drawing some Yu-Gi-Oh art and posting it on his instergram and counting his royalties in between Konami and NAS executives getting his drunk and asking his permission for another Yu-Gi-Oh.
>Osirus is my favorite, i just recently bought the legal TCG card. ...Too bad the game has changed a whole lot and this XYZ and pendulum bullshit makes all the old cards I have and know irrelevant lol
Emulate the PSP Game. Tag Force Special has an English Patch, and has the original YGO characters as well as their anime cards
You try being stuck in the Millennium Puzzle for over 3000 years with the disembodied vengeful voices of the people your dad ordered to kill wispering driving you mad. Good thing he met Yugi and the others to mellow him out.
He got incredibly tempted when he first shoved the Eye into his socket and saw his son as Pharaoh. Akhenaden was a flawed guy.
Although he had it coming, seeing as that Thief King Bakura would have ended up as Bard King Bakura if Kul Elna wasn't sacked and Modern Bakura's personality stuck around.
But still, if pegasus saw both dm's slabs and he knew they represesnted human beings, then he should have guessed those weirdly dressed dudes were egyptian. And therefore should have represented them as such not as a cyan skin zombie guy and a blondie.
Retcon. BEWD in memory arc was supposed to be at least as strong as a God, but the arc was rushed so we couldn't see its potential. In the later part of this arc, Seto (controlled by Ackunaten) claimed White Dragon has the power that rivals God, and neither Mahado and Atem denies this statement.
In fact, In the real history happened 3000 years ago, Seto was able to raise a war against bot Atem and Dark Priest with BWED alone.
So yeah, White Dragon received a huge nerf when it was made into a normal monster card in real world.
So that's why that thief got burned in Pegasus memories.
Do other items also has drawbacks like that?
Also if it absorbs eveil how can you expect it not to become an evill tool?
Her spirit is already DMG for some reason unlike Mahado who needed to fuse his soul to his monster to make it Dark Magician. Probably something that was changed from the original plan. She likely just tagged along with her master.
I do wonder how a yugioh manga or anime set in the 3000 year era would worked out?
>atem's raising as a prince
>his friendship with mahado and probably seto
>the death of the old pharaoh and the birth of the millenium items (also, the destruction of bakuras village and the birth of the thirf king)
>atem taking up the throne
>the 6 priests
>mahado meeting and training mana
>the TRUE version of the millenium world events.
There is material, but, would have worked?
It was explained that the monsters are born from the people's spirit energy (the KA)
The KA of a criminal or a creep gives birth to weak demons and abominations.
The KA of person with a pure heart gives birth to a noble and powerful beast or being like the dark magicians.
Kisaras KA is pure and the beast born from it just happened to be the BEWD, thats all.
>White Dragon received a huge nerf when it was made into a normal monster card in real world.
Maybe Pegasus was so afraid of the god cards he decided BEWD shoulld be the strongest he could print but a nerf was needed.
because he brought sexy back like a motherfucker, thats why!
this is the final part of the manga, for all we know, the relationship between Atem and the DM's / Mahado and Mana's existence wasnt planned yet at the time of Battle city.
Some pages are missing from the beginning of 291. I only have scans in jp though.
Weren't Mahad, Mana, and Atem childhood friends? I mean since Mahad and Mana are familiar with Atem they have to be the kids of high ranking officials that were close to the royal family.
One more week left, did you preorder your tickets already?
You get an alternate art Obelisk with a ticket.
Yami may have met Mahad at a young age, but i'm not sure about Mana, she may have appeared as an aprentice to Mahad once he mastered magic.
And Mana casually talking to the paraoh here might be Yugi's influence making him more forgiving and soft.
One of these pages mention how Atem got mad at Mana for being in the pots when he was younger, and considering he's a teenager still it'd mean they'd have to known each other young.
It means nothing. There are multiple copies of DMG just like how there are more than 1 copy of BEWD ( even though there's only 1 Kisara) since in the end, they're just card games. The difference is that people like Atem/Kaiba are tied to the history of the Items and stuff, so they have a special connection to them. To all the other players who didn't have that ancient Egyptian past, they're just cards.
From this two pages, it seems Kaz is really pushing the idea that peace is important so that history doesn't repeat itself, if Kaiba had his ways, we would have another genocide, another Thief Bakura would rise and another Pharaoh would kill himself to atone for his sins (like Atem's dad).
>we must become the Pharaoh's shadow
This could probably the inspiration behind Danzo in Naruto. Danzo was the shadow/root, Hiruzen was the leaf/sun, one doing the dirty work, the other keeping the image of the village.
for sure. I'm just going with the context in which the concept was brought up, with YGO being at WSJ at the time and Naruto starting to get popular. Two authors on the same magazine, there could have been some overlap.
>no SA airings
I-I'ts not like I wanted to see the shitty dub or anything
