Oh boy, a shitty Eva thread, I legitimately needed this today.

I haven't rewatched Eva in fucking years, well over 7, and besides vaguely rebuilding (pun intended cause I'm a faggot) my knowledge to just barely understand the movies, all the stuff that made Eva fun an interesting is gone from my mind; I don't remember why I personally liked it, I don't remember why it's so widely praised and what it's breakthroughs and merits are, I don't remember any of the crazy theories about the ending, EoE and what's going on between all the characters. It's just Eva, I have my impressions and vague recollections but I've been living with it for over a decade.

A friend of mine has just finished the TV series today and is about the watch EoE tonight. He HATES the show. He says its too depressing, it never got happy and that it was all boring, no questions were answered and that he doesn't give a shit about the character's mental issues or why they're all weak willed losers. I didn't want to spoil the movie so I told him nothing, but I know the conversation we're gonna have tonight is going to be annoying because it's fucking EoE, there will be no answers. I get the impression a lot of why he doesn't like it is because it's not Gurren Lagann, so there's no accounting for shit taste, but you sort of understand where I'm coming from when I'm going to have to try and talk to someone about a show that's just so distant from me.

So I guess I'm requesting you guys to tell me why you liked Eva, what made Eva good and great, where it's flaws lie and maybe provide some answers for some of the show's questions that my friend can't think for himself. I don't usually do these long posts and stuff because who fucking cares, but I'd appreciate some of your thoughts, recaps, impressions, etc. Thanks again, and sorry for the lengthy post.

I just finished EoE last night and the TV show the night before

I loved it for the same reasons your friend hated it. I loved the absolutely bleak tone and the way most of the characters reacted in eerily realistic ways to their situations. Stuff like shinji screaming his head off or all 3 of the Eva's pilots becoming week and depressive. It's very realistic to how a few high schoolers would react.

The lack of answers too. I like shows leaving things up to interpretation, and while I think EoE took it maybe one step too far, it only made the ending more enjoyable for me.

The TV ending I think was a much more satisfying ending than EoE. Congratulations actually drives the positive points home, but also doesnt make you want to kill yourself. It also confirms a happy emotional ending for at least shinji.

I almost wish I watched the final 2 episodes after EoE.

They both are pilots and horny teenagers, of course sexual and affectional tension rise between them, especially given their background. When does the last episode take place in relation to EoE? I understand the episode is all in shinjis head, but the congratulations scene implied he found some emotional ground to stand on. The ending of EoE of him choking out asuka implies none of this, and hes clearly still an emotional wreck by the time the movie ends. When is he supposed to find three answers he does in the last episode? At death?

The last episode stands during Instrumentation (when they're all turned into tang). Shinji finds the answers and actually rejects instrumentation, that's why he goes back to the real world.

As for the choking, theory goes that way: when he strangles her in the instrumentation, she doesn't fight back, because you can't harm anyone anymore. When they're on the beach, he might test if he's still in the false world or not. Seeing her react as the "real" Asuka stops him

EoTV and EoE are supposedly two alternative endings
BUT you can also assume that they take place in Shinji's head during Instrumentality, where later he comes to the conclusion about accepting the reality as it is with all the pain and suffering it carries along. He finally grows up, "becomes a man", leaves the Eva (which symbolized him leaving his mother and being ready to open up to people and live on his own) and makes a decision not only for himself but for the whole humanity.
As for the ending, no one knows for certain, but its assumed that Shinji has been on this shore for a long time (gravemarkers and Misato's rusty medallion confirming this) and didn't believe his eyes (especially after seeing quantum Rei) that Asuka's real. That's why he tried to strangle her, to feel the rejection of "other" once again. Instead though, he feels acceptance when she carries his cheek. He breaks down realizing what he tried to do. Asuka's final line is ambiguous, but its assumed from Yuko's words that she's referring to Shinji's little jerk off in hospital
