Is Your Name actually any good? I've been looking up a bunch of shit about it and I'm kind of impressed at how it's surpassed Spirited Away in sales worldwide with the exception of Japan.
>>
It's pretty good, but I don't know why people are losing their collective shit over it
>>
I didnt like it, its nothing special plotwise or animation wise.
>>
>>152457345
The power of a massive advertising budget more like.
>>
>>152457345
Isn't SA still #1 in Japan? I know YN is only a few million behind but that's actually kind of amazing considering it's only been out for a couple of months now and SA has been out for almost two decades.
>>
>>152457223
It's an overly long "will they or wont they" Friends plot with Sci-Fi tropes and high-school students.
I really liked it, but I tend to be emotional towards such things.
>>
>tfw everyone in the world is losing their shit over this but it still will never be released in my shithole of a country
>>
>>152457223
>Is Your Name actually any good?
well it's not Jack but I like it and don't intend to change it
>>
Kind of just an average anime film of its sort. A step up for Shinkai though.
>>
>>152457345
Making a lot of money doesn't make it a good film.

Spirited Away is just pseudo-Disney trash with even simpler art and less subtle political messages (kinda like most of Miyazaki's films), your name is just Degrassi The Anime with some lame sci-fi shit.
>>
>>152457530
At least SA has interesting character designs
>>
>>152457563
>has interesting character designs
You're right, I love autistic-looking children and monsters that inspired the concept of creepypastas.
>>
>>152457611
No idea if you are being ironic but having something nice and intriguing to look at that is nicely animated is a bonus
>>
>>152457223
if you enjoy protagonists that forget each others names and dont realize they're skipping time, then sure
>>
>>152457636
Who are you kidding? Miyazaki's character designs are boring and uninspired.

It seems like every time he draws a face he purposely makes it seem like all of their facial features are sunken in, almost like their faces are smooth and have no bumps at all. It's creepy.
>>
>>152457696
Im talking about SA specifically and that alone for me puts is above yourname which was plain boring
>>
>>152457530
What is the political message of Spirited Away?
>>
>>152457739
bath house whores suffer a lot
>>
>>152457724
SA monsters* specifically
>>
>>152457739
You're kidding, right? The entire film is a criticism of capitalism.
>>
>>152457809
You burguers see criticism of capitalism in everything

I'm sure Chihiro's parents turning into pigs after driving in with an Audi and credit cards wasn't representing anything,
>>
>>152457911
Thats a Japanese tale where you get cursed into an animal form if you eat uninvited
Try again.
>>
Its like watching two people with Alzheimer try to date.
>>
>>152457739
People who employ child labor are literally witches
>>
>>152457925
Are you actually this delusional?

>Chihiro’s parents turning into pigs symbolizes how some humans become greedy. At the very moment Chihiro says there is something odd about this town, her parents turn into pigs. There were people that “turned into pigs” during Japan’s bubble economy (consumer society) of the 1980s, and these people still haven’t realized they’ve become pigs. Once someone becomes a pig, they don’t return to being human but instead gradually start to have the “body and soul of a pig". These people are the ones saying, ‘We are in a recession and don’t have enough to eat.' This doesn’t just apply to the fantasy world. Perhaps this isn’t a coincidence and the food is actually (an analogy for) "a trap to catch lost humans."

thought there was some stuff about traditional japanese values in there as well, didn't seem to be JUST a criticism of capitalism. At least, that's what my film professor said.

I dunno, I liked it a lot.

>>
>>152457976
while you're right, your argument is just disproving your point, since the folkore surrounds lessons about greed, of course greed is a common theme under anything that touches on capitalism, but its not meant to be a political agenda, its touching upon lots of myth about japanese culture

stop projecting your shit onto the product, this is the main problem with americans and soccer moms

I keep remembering that scene where Taki plays basketball in Mitsuha's body and then process to have heart boner.
>>
>>152458111
It's less about that and more about consumption, how capitalism makes us want things that leads us to wanting more and becoming generally insatiable. There are several characters in the film that follow this pattern.

And meanwhile the main character, Chihiro/Sen, ultimately finds fulfillment by abandoning her individuality and subjecting herself to hard labor, which is frankly also kind of a weird message but I guess it plays pretty well in Japan.
>>
>>152458212
What lewd things would Taki do in Mitsuha's body?

Be honest, did you thought that the comet was the one causing the body swap thing?
I actually thought that it was. Especially after the scene where it first broke apart and they never swap again. I thought since it broke, the magic was broken too, or something like that.
>>
>>152458266
To be fair, Miyazaki has actually identified as being a Marxist/Communist in the past.

Now that I think about it his political ideologies in general are just bizarre.

>>152457223
It's neither extremely good nor terribly bad. After seeing it, I had no clue why it's popularity is where it is.

No, it was pretty obvious from the BGM that it landed on her and she died. What puzzled me was how they'd go about doing that while showing her grown up self at the start of the movie and in the intro.
>>
>>152458769
ah wait, so the body-swap happened for no real reason?
>>
>>152458848
I figured the reason would have turned up after that, there was still plenty of time left for the movie and we had already visited the shrine that would probably have become important later.

Can someone explain why Your Name won best animation film when another anime film won 2nd best Japanese film of the year? Did it just win as a consolation because of its success?

This is just like when Avatar BTFO'd everything in sales when it came out, even though it was just Pocahontas in Space. Nowadays nearly every "major" movie stomps the classics in terms of sales. Movies are simply watched more now.
>>
By that logic, movies shouldn't flop especially big budget movies like moana

>I'm kind of impressed at how it's surpassed Spirited Away in sales worldwide with the exception of Japan.

Mainichi best animation is for blockbuster. The another reward is for small-budget, crown funding animation.

FYI, Spirited Away won best animation while Millennium Actress, IIRC, won another award.
>>
>>152465749
Understand that those awards are often not based on artistic merit, but rather "How well have you advertised our genre?"
A gay Bolivian movie that does gangbusters at the box office and wins an Oscar is always going to win first prize at the gay Bolivian film awards, because it successfully promoted the industry.
>>
>>152457223
It's a good film that's enjoyable to watch, but its love story is very sappy.
>the two fall in love through texts
>shinto gods just happen to choose Taki
>shinto gods are considerate enough to reverse time
>not only is their a body swap, changing events that have already happened, but they're 3 years apart and there's time traveling
I honestly don't see how it's sooooo fucking popular.
>>
>>152466874
>I didn't watch the movie and I hate it
>>
>>152466874
Easier to talk than done. I bet if anyone other than Shinkai do the same thing, they will only flop. Shinkai literally borrowed the power of musubi to make it hit, but there will be the price to pay in the future.
>>
>>152466917
I did watch it, motherfucker.
Twice because I actually enjoyed it, but like I mentioned, the films plot is very mediocre with the sappy love story.
Honestly, if it weren't for the massive ad campaign before it's release, then it would have probably just been another niche anime film. Hell, even my "normie" facebook friends were sharing the trailer when it was released.
>>
>>152460405
In the sense that he's a supposedly super liberal?
>>
>>152466874
the plot feels pretty thin because they gloss over things that another film would have spent more time on (their body swapping hijinks etc)
the other time travel things don't make all that much sense either but I assume these things are expanded on in the novel/manga series
I think some of the themes probably resonate much more with japanese audiences
>>152467097
yeah I don't think anyone else could have pulled it off

>>152467426
>the plot feels pretty thin because they gloss over things that another film would have spent more time on

>>152466585
I'm not talking about the Noburo Ofuji Award. Konosekai won the Excellence Film Award which is basically the runner-up for best film. Considering Your Name was not even nominated for best film, it makes little sense to me that it could win best animated film over Konosekai.
>>
It's a mediocre film that's overrated.

Think "Avatar".
>>
>>152467480
well I get that it will annoy some people that it's all covered in a short insert song music video montage rather than some more substantial scenes, it is made pretty clear that it's not what the movie is about though and i'm fine with it

The blockbuster Japanese animated film "your name." shows no sign of leaving the hit charts toward the end of the year, after raking in more than 20 billion yen in box office revenue and topping the weekend box office in China.

>"The figures sound just unrealistic to me," says director Makoto Shinkai, as he has difficulty coming to grips with the enormous success his film has had over the past several months.

>The fresh sensibility exuding from the screen has struck a chord among not only teenagers but also adult audiences. For the 43-year-old director, animation films are "something like band aids. They can heal wounds from adolescence a bit quicker and can be discarded once they serve the need."

>While Shinkai has absolutely no idea about what his next work will be like, he feels "no pressure" weighing on him and says, "I will just do the best I can in my next film." He is humble enough to say, "There are many better directors than me."

>Shinkai himself aspires to play the role of a "faucet," from which he can deliver what people require in times of need.

>Fans here and abroad are anxious to see what fresh water they can tap from the magical faucet.
