Fucking Legend.

My favourites from that era would be all the good proto-Ghibli stuff Miyazaki and Takahata had their hands in. Toei movies, Lupin III, WMT, Conan, Gauche and Nausicaa, and so on. I think that's the best of early anime, never been a Dezaki or Mushi Pro fan.

Speed Racer

It has more death per episode than Game of Thrones. It has mystery. It has a protagonist with a clear and attainable goal. It has a love triangle between the protagonist, the strong and independent woman, and the obviously gay mechanic. And the creators were so progressive that they got around the law that prohibited the depiction of black characters in cartoons by giving the Racer family a pet chimp that, by all means and purposes, was the equal to its owners.

I can see how children may like it but as an adult, the concept is dumb and not that interesting. It was weird how at first the show was about how Marie Antoinette had trouble adjusting to her life in Versailles and there were episodes where she was basically the main character, but then in the later half she is basically forgotten until the very last episodes.

Rose of Versailles is my favourite pre '85 show by far. Oscar is one of the most nuanced characters in anime, and I find her genuinely inspiring.

In terms of films, I love Angel's Egg for the visuals and the abstract story telling, but I'd probably rate Night on the Galactic railroad as my favourite movie from that era. I really should read the book one day, but I feel that a Japanese to English translation would probably suck all the life out the original prose.

I've just finished 3,000 leagues in search of mother and it was amazing.

Made me realize that between the founders of ghibli, Miyazaki might be the most creative, but Takahata is the better director of the two.

I've been rewatching the ghibli films and so far I think I like Takahata's a lot more, which definitely wasn't the case when I was younger. I think Takahata is better at making believable characters. his stories aren't all that dramatic so he kinda needs the characters to be good to carry his films where as with miyazaki you have so much fantastic stuff going on that the characters kinda take a backseat to the creative imagery.

Not really. Going to the planet in the Andromeda galaxy where they give away mechanical bodies away for free is set as a goal early in the story, so the fact that Tetsurou and Maetel eventually arrive at that planet is not much of a spoiler. However, what a "mechanical body" actually means and what Tetsurou ends up doing as a result is different in each version.
