The funny part, of course, is that Yayaka had always been the anchor of their team and the one pulling most of the weight. Toto and Yuyu were essentially just backup, but more often than not they ended up as an audience to the 1-man show. Yuyu wasn't fast enough to hit anything unless she took it by surprise or Yayaka already incapacitated it, and Toto's ranged attack was just a weaker equivalent to Yayaka's primary offense.

The NyuYuTo team would have gotten steamrolled in episode 9's PI since Nyunyu herself is useless in a fight.

And yeah you make an interesting point, they are dangerous but they didn't really do that much.

Yayaka was by far the most dangerous of the trio, she could actually get in and do huge damage really well and incapacitated enemies all on her own without normally taking much damage herself.


Yuyu's punches were devastating and Toto could put some pressure if he wanted, but neither of them seemed to be good at a direct confrontation if it ever came to it.

Combat wise, in the end henshin Yayaka is probably the most capable fighter overall with the exception of the white henshins, because those were just godmode tier shit.

All of those things sort of influenced ep 3's pure illusion in a similar way Iroha's pure illusion was also influenced by her art.
That means they could have found her deep pure illusion and fucked her up big time if things had gone a little wrong back then.

If you're in for the characters, themes, the plot, the romance, the sci fi, the action, the animation, etc.

This was definitely the best episode action and adventure wise.

I see Yayaka's love is often debated, was it childhood dear friend love or did she have more feelings for Cocona? There's no general agreement on either.
But for Papika I've just never seen her love questioned, everyone just accepted it by the end of the show as romantic. But there's definitely some familiarity in her love, though she seemed more like a little sister too.

I liked Girlish's characterization a lot.
The girls balanced the line between 2D and 3D well.
They showed a lot of a human side, for better or worse, with selfishness, fears and hopes and acted in somewhat more realistic ways than the average cute girl but they were still pretty cute.

I wish more characters went for something like that. Showing the characters as flawed and carrying a lot of emotional baggage and issues, while still being cute and enjoyable girls.

It was pretty damn sudden.
When Papika appears she was practically a stalker to Cocona, dragging her around almost by force and not leaving her alone.

That's the way it looked at first to Yayaka, but out of nowhere they become best friends and fight together against her now.
It's an understandable reason to be shocked and feel some scorn and insecurities the way she did and lash out a bit. She must have felt so terrible inside anytime she saw her dear friend having cute light hearted yuri adventures with the puppy while she was stuck with the twins and the crazy cultists being treated like trash and forced to keep it all hidden.

Yayaka's love is genuine, her their childhood friendship even if it was started by an order was the real deal and that much is unquestionable.
The problem is that Yayaka had a hard time being honest about her feelings. I wouldn't call her tsundere because she was actually nice to Cocona, but she hid her maiden's feelings for her with a cool easy going girl facade. Later she tries to act the cynical who only cares about the mission instead. But that facade doesn't last either.

She even does a half assed attempts to get Cocona on her side but she comes off as too antagonistic and cold with it. She doesn't tell Cocona her feelings straight, she just says 'they're different" or "she doesn't understand" and "stop getting involved".

Episode 5, 8 and 9 show Yayaka's struggle in being honest about her feelings. And it takes until near the end for Yayaka to finally embreace them, once she does she can talk to Papika on an equal level, she wasn't hostile to her anymore, because she wasn't feeling insecure anymore, she didn't have anything to hide.
Her henshin was the result of taking that last step towards admitting her feelings.
It really took a lot of shit and pressure and character development to get Yayaka to open up and now that she finally did it it's too late, Papika x Cocona is the OTP and they are in love love love.

Yeah but Yayaka felt guilty because she grew to like Cocona as a genuine friend whereas the reason for even knowing and getting close to Cocona was because the enemy team had told her to do so. The artificial aspect of the whole manipulation had a huge impact on her feelings towards Cocona, and Cocona took it very bad when she learned the truth.
Yayaka was pretty much powerless and couldn't do anything. Papika, on the other hand, had no sense of guilt about what she did, because it was genuine for her: she used Cocona to go to PI, but to her, that was only to have fun. Besides, she had nothing to hide from Cocona due to lack of memories.

Also I think the way the two of them , Papika and Yayaka, they think in very different ways.
Yayaka was much more self concious, and overthought stuff, she seemed to carry the weight of her actions very heavily, and had a great sense of personal responsibility.
Where's Papika was much more of a free spirit, she didn't overthink stuff or let anything throw her off balance except for a few times and it was due to really big shocking stuff that almost broke her down at the time. Otherwise she was able to enjoy the moment and acted without shame or regrets, her warmth was very genuine.

That might be one of the big things that made Papika so perfect for Cocona.

I don't know how much the writer change affected it, the pacing and exposition could have been better specially near the end.
But I definitely felt the animation change, when they went from overdelivering animation to Oshiyama having to draw for 4 days straight to deliver in time.
