>Chinese translators are fed up with the extra work of translating the titles -- which are practically stories in and of themselves -- and then trying to fit them on the cover.
>In the wake of the release of the impressively titled "Nuiage! Nugashite? Kise kaeru! ! Kanojo ga kōkō debut ni shippai shite hikikomori to kashita no de, ore ga seishun (fashion) o coordinate suru koto ni.", there has been backlash from Chinese translators and book dealers who are finding the ever increasing title lengths counterproductive in a variety of ways.
>At 68 characters long, the new title is the longest yet for a light novel -- and causing problems both at home and overseas. It's been pointed out that the longer the title is, the more difficult the book becomes to catalog in a database, where space is at a premium. With a 68-character-long title, there may end up not even being room for a description of the book.
http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2017/01/16-1/chinese-translators-rebel-against-long-light-novel-titles
>>
This is a thing? I thought it was just the title of another light novel when I saw it in the catalog yesterday.
>>
Well, it's a gimmick. A retarded one that only manchildren writing Young Adult tier fiction for illiterate Nips would think of, though.
From a marketing point of view, people can't tell their friends if the title is too long or complicated, the press hates such titles by default because it makes them feel stupid saying or writing the same shit over and over, but more importantly, listing that shit or running promotions will probably be a nightmare because most online stores or the software running on a bookshop will probably have a fixed length for the 'title' field.
>68 characters and it's not a book on gene therapy, how to cure cancer, how to do anything
Fucking Nips. Two bombs weren't enough.
>>
This joke died years ago

I assume it's because LN readers are just the stupidest fucking people so they need to be told exactly what a book is about, otherwise they'll probably forget halfway through.

The two most popular light novels of the past three years don't even do the long LN title meme. Does that not hold any sway in convincing others to stop?
>>

I guess many of their editors are aware that they have a merely mediocre LN on their hands, so it needs to go along with the fads as it can't stand out on its own.

Traditionally winning a writing competition sponsored by a major publisher (e.g. the Dengeki Novel Prize) was how a lot of authors established themselves, but these days any faggot with a web novel on narou with lots of followers can get an offer from a publisher.
>>
>>152376620
It's gotten worse recently because standards have dropped.

>Given how stressful the publishing schedule must be, it's not a surprise that the careers of light novel authors tend to be short-lived. Some authors may get lucky and produce consistent hits, but the majority of them do not make a sustainable living through writing light novels.
>Because the author turnover rate is so high, the light novel industry actively encourages submissions from new authors in the form of light novel contests. The Dengeki Novel Prize, established in 1994, is easily the most famous of these contests. The contest is held by ASCII Media Works, which is owned by—you guessed it—Kadokawa. It receives thousands of submissions every year and has propelled the career of many popular authors, including Reki Kawahara of Sword Art Online fame.

So at least competitions acted as a screen of quality of sorts. However:

>It is also becoming steadily more popular these days for light novel labels to publish web novels in print form. Web novels are amateur works posted online, and while they may have an unfortunate reputation for being self-indulgent and poorly written, they do benefit from having an existing readership and a wealth of text to draw regular print releases from. The light novel version is often heavily edited and may even feature an altered storyline, which encourages web novel readers to buy the light novel as well. It's a win-win situation. Some examples of popular web-novels-turned-light-novels-turned-anime include The irregular at magic high school, Log Horizon, and Re:Zero.
>>
>>152376751
>The light novel version is often heavily edited

They edited the glop out of the LN for SAO, didn't they? Or am I misremembering that?
>>
>>152376751
Mahouka was a web novel? Why haven't I seen people shitposting about hilarious lines from it that didn't make it into the LN? Was the WN that uneventful?

>while they may have an unfortunate reputation for being self-indulgent and poorly written
>self-indulgent
Holy fuck is this why so many LNs are just masturbatory power fantasies with powerless NEETs as the main character?
>>
>>152376824
Yeah, along with other storyline changes (e.g. Kirito originally lost to Sinon at the end of Phantom Bullet, but the Ln turned it into plasma grenade mutual self-destruction.)

Ironically Kawahara actually won the competition and gained a publishing deal with Accel World, and SAO was just an existing side project of his that they decided to pick up as well alongside.

But SAO is the one that drew in the big bucks in the end.
>>
>>152376911

Not necessarily. Sometimes the efforts of the editor are the only way the text approaches anything near readability.

Overlord's really good, has been steadily improving and has a one-word title.

Granted, it still doesn't compare to the "true" novels of yesteryere like Slayers, Seikai no Senki, or even older stuff like Hadashi no Gen, but it's been getting longer and distinguishing itself.

The steady improvement in Overlord compared to say, Mahouka, is remarkable.

>Life has its fortunes and its hardships.

>I believe these words of the old man of Mito is a wise saying. Life has its mountains and valleys. It is exactly because one climbed over adversity that one could sail down, and if one keeps taking the easy way down one would soon find oneself surrounded by rising slopes. The conclusion is therefore, a person should persevere through life’s climbs, but I think different.

>This is what I think.

>I can walk the level path without any ascents or descents, of moderate pain and moderate comfort.

>What I could do, and what I could not do.

>What I want to do, and what I don’t want to do.

>What I want others to do, and what I don’t want others to do.

>By making sure of all that, I walk, looking for a path that is suitable for who I am at the moment. I live a steady life, without taking unnecessary risks, without collecting the hate of others. There are probably those out there who think “what’s so fun about a life without its pains and enjoyments,” but please think about it. Regardless of what one wants or doesn’t want, life will always have its storms.

>Inscrutable are the ways of heaven. Therefore, one should pin the instability down to a level one could control.

>That was practically how I lived my life.

Roughly one short sentence length is the ideal maximum I'd guess. Boo Boo is starting to get better, it helps that it's an isekai where the humans travel back and forth between the real world and the fantasy one so there are interesting conflicts that arise, like the spread of fantasy world-born religions.

Boo boo set itself for failure the moment game crap was set for the world. Also, Kamachi makes a fucking convoluted system almost every series, it sounds interesting but holds very little ground. Well, we all pretty much agree Boo Boo is the least interesting, but I like his use of meanings ofwords and mythologies in Index, Zashiki Warashi and Blood Sign. I also quite like the Blood Sign summoning system even if it is complicated.
>>
>>152383175
>Boo boo set itself for failure the moment game crap was set for the world.
From what I've read though they barely dwell on the game aspect. Right at the start he just says "OK Beatrice is endgame tier, has a bunch of stats multipliers and over 9000 fire-related skills", and that is just shorthand for "Beatrice can do whatever she wants as long as I can bullshit it into being thermodynamics-related". They don't spend time grinding for experience or collecting new skills.

And it's a lot less convoluted than Blood Sign's five dimensional billiards, and a lot less arbitrary than Zashiki Warashi's "okay so what if we did a thing that is like the power of this Youkai but we swap a thing for a thing and represent a thing with another thing and that is totally okay".
>>
>>152383086
The problem with Kamachi is how he often puts a deus ex machina element every time.

Why the hell should I care about some chink translators who translate isekai WNs/LNs? Or translators at all in general? But well, I bet they're at least better than the English ones who are machine 'translators' 90% of the time.

The whole point of the "package" deal was that all youkai originate from a human population's bullshit supernatural interpretation of perfectly natural phenomena they didn't understand (how mythologies are usually made). The only limit to fucking with a youkai is whether or not you can get a sizable enough population of humans to collectively misinterpret a youkai's traits. Thus the requirement that "packages" involve a large number of people - it takes this amount of people to override the general population's understanding of a youkai.

Illness Magic, Sabishi Kazu, and the Hishigami dude do seem to be where the rules stop applying, though.

Good, like hell I'm reading these things for prose and similar bullshit. Its essentially the same as why I watch anime. Also to confess, not being in my natve language I kinda give less of a fuck.

The narou trend has been very enjoyable so far and I can't really get the same thing in the VN's most of the time as far as pure high fantasy adventure is concerned unless it includes gameplay(Ikusa Megami)

Too bad stuff like Faraway paladin, Vermillion, MT(to an extent) and others are very rare. You have to search through a large pile of trash to find something passable but it is narou after all.

In the past you had stuff like El hazard and others who's primary focus was on adventure and exploration but sadly nowadays the focus is somewhere else or its just done too poorly and for the sake of parody.

They still worked by the same rules, just contained differently.
Illness Magic worked through scientifically known diseases, fungus, ect. and used that known theory as well as his rapidly accumulating stress to use his different charms.
The Hishigami from what I could understand were essentially a myth created within the family as an attempt to reach higher. Due to that, they were essentially bound to that myth (note how Kyou was essentially being forced into the new realm of "reasonable" caused by the Ver.39 regardless of his wishes.)
Saiki Kazu if I remember right used modern media to create his own myth as he needed, but I would have to go back and read it again to be sure.

Dude gets banished from his family but ends up inheriting a gem passed down from father to son until his grandfather's generation. He is the ninth generation and inside the Gem are memory copies of the first seven generations of his family who talk to him and constantly comment on his actions. The titles describe each generation head. But the books aren't very long and the story seems to have strayed a bit so the naming convention sort of fell apart after book 9 which was nowhere near any sort of conclusion to the story.
>>
>>152386579
It's a pretty okay read though. You could just replace the title with Sevens.

Neglected young noble teen gets kicked out of his house. Picks up his house's heirloom which records the memory and skills of 7 of his ancestors (he's the 9th). >that there's expats of English-speaking countries living in Chinese-speaking ones like Singapore
More than that, English is the official language of Singapore, the education system is designed so everyone is supposed to learn both English and the mother tongue of their race (whether that's Chinese, Malay, or other, but the country is majority Chinese) and they generally learn it quite well. So Sky for example as a Chinese Singaporean would be fluent in both Mandarin and the Queen's English, with possibly some Cantonese or Hokkien and some Malay on the side
>>

Almost all the Chinese dialects are written the exact same way (with exceptions of simplified vs. traditional or certain exclusive kanji) so that's another plus.

Naming was good until 9th generation since it still. It would've been better if it ended with 1 ancestor accepting him each volume

Actually no, it's just that PRC, RoC, and Singapore were all trigger-happy against "dialects", and until the last century none of the modern "dialects" (Mandarin included) had a formalized writing system, the government sanctioned Classical Chinese (basically Chinese in Confucius's times).
>>
>>152389930
That's because Qin standardized the writing system but not the spoken systems. There's no reason to start splitting off writing systems for dialects anyway, any more than there's reasons to start splitting off different languages for Brooklynspeak and Dixiespeak
>>
>>152389719
They can be written using the same characters as Mandarin since the characters express concepts, and thus via writing be at least partially mutually intelligible, but as actual languages they're actually pretty dissimilar and not very mutually intelligible at all.

Then we had teachers who only care about their paychecks. That's how CLB is introduced.

>but not much further apart than French and English.
As someone who had to suffer through highschool French that's far apart enough for me to not consider French and English to be variants on one another.

With that said, praise be to Mandarin that the Cantonese-speaking Hong Kong and the Hokkien-speaking Taiwan and the clusterfuck that is Singapore can all read the same LNs
>>
>>152390212
Not really, the current ones are all descendants of Confucius's language, just that they drifted apart over time like how French, Italian, Romanian, etc. came from Cicero and Caesar's language.
>>
>>152390212
It really isn't. They're written the same way for the most part. Actual Cantonese written down and handed to someone in Beijing will be read intelligibly, and not in the Italian guy reading Spanish sense. They're often unintelligible while speaking, but that's it.
And if you call every single dialect in China a seperate language then Chinese becomes a language family.

>Korea and Japan
Not really? They have their own writing system which sets them apart sufficiently (well Korean used Hanja very liberally until recently so you might be able to make a case that way). Both of them are part of the Sinic language family though.

>>152390338
This is actually incorrect, it's the reverse - Hakko, Minnan, etc. were originally languages of entirely different peoples. Consider that when Qin unified China, it was like a quarter the present size. When China expanded, they brought their writing system (and formal spoken system to the effect of bureaucrats and such) with them - which wasn't very hard, since Imperial China did the whole cultural superpower thing back then.

Have you ever visited a Hongkongese forum? The government, news, and publishing industry prefer writing in mimic-Mandarin because that make them more accessible. Netizens don't care about that.

And maybe the dialects were created when conquered natives picked up Chinese poorly, but they all definitely came from Old Chinese, at most borrowed a few vocabularies from the locals. There's one, the Bai, which is more likely to be a cousin to Old Chinese like Umbrian and Oscan are to Latin, than a descendant, but that's it.
>>
>>152390695
I'm saying that the process is less of branching out and more of merging in. The government didn't give two shits how you spoke as long as some people knew how to fill out the forms.

Not sure what you're talking about but it sounds a lot worse than Ming Chinese. That being said I think English sounds worse than Middle English aka Chaucer too so who knows
>>
>>152390773
It's only merging since the last century, before that it's all branching out. Min is dated to have branched around Han dynasty and the rest between Tang and Song. Due to the yuuuge amount of poetry and rime tables, we can find the lowest common denominator between the "dialects". On the other hand, merging creates an unsortable mess because people don't reverse-engineer the language before mixing it, like how the Middle Chinese entering tone is all over the place in Beijing Mandarin - evidence that the Beijing dialect is a mixed dialect

And Manchu has pitiful influence on Mandarin outside of the walls of Beijing, and only in vocabulary. 18th~19th century Manchurian students of Chinese complained that their textbooks were useless as people don't speak like in Ming dynasty when the textbooks were written. An example is the distinction of Jian Yin and Tuan Yin, two class of consonants that were distinguished in Manchurian textbooks but no more in contemporary Chinese. See how early westerners were introduced by Manchurian officials to the island of Kinmen and the port of Tien Tsin, but now they're Jinmen and Tianjin in Mandarin.

God that's a long post

Mandarin originally comes from an official position in Qing China.
Blame Westerners at the time for naming everything Mandarin.
>>
>>152391612
Please. I just presented an example (jian/tuan yin) and evidence(Tianjin and Jinmen's old spellings) that the Manchurians' pronunciation were older and more distinct while the Chinese themselves mixed things up. If you speak a non-Mandarin dialect yourself, you can easily spot that the two "jin" were supposed to be different like how the Manchurians kept them, while native Mandarin Chinese were crap at keeping them distinct.

TL;DR: I presented evidences, you presented arguments.

Out of all the various languages in the world, the one that had to become a global sensation is Japanese anime for fuck's sake. One of the most obtuse and difficult languages to translate because of the use of symbols instead of letters and defined words.

Is this our punishment for nuking Japan? An obscure, confusing language where anyone actually talented enough to decipher in any short amount of time would never bother with translating shitty tiddy books and instead make six figures translating business meetings and manuals.

A good chunk of the good LNs out these days involve an Isekai into a traditional fantasy world. Not a Japanese fantasy world, a straight up WoW-like world, or an FFXIV-like world. It's gotten huge, with some like Goblin Slayer literally showing DnD character sheets as a part of the world. Any idea why the Light Novel community rallied towards that as a new setting?

I'm not complaining, I love that shift, but I'm surprised it's happening.

Like russian presidency, term limits on whore-marriage don't count if they're non-consecutive.

Because D&D has always been huge in Japan and there's literally a non-negligible market for actual transcriptions of D&D playthroughs

maybe I'll just wait for them to actually publish the final version.

The title is the description though.
That's part of the problem

We have fapfic from Victorian times.

Why do light novels suffer from this problem but manga doesn't?

Well you could flip through the pages to a better idea what can you expect from the manga.
