It's an odd duck becasue the combat is actually somewhat challenging and the CPU doesn't hold back even in the post tutorial fight. I do enjoy when a game mashes two genres together that seem to not work but the overall effect is good. I should finish it some time soon.

I liked how fleshed out they made Horohoro but my god did they end his character on a wet fart. It was part of the very rushed ending but his fight with his Officiator was too fast and then he just becomes some hobo farmer. The ending itself is somewhat bleak because nobody can realize their goals and now they have to do things on a human level which for characters like Horohoro means that his dream will most likely die with him. I'd argue that before the SF started off, the episodic nature of the series was very much so about easy outs. Boxer guy got an easy out from his grief. They solved the painter ghost pretty easy. No he would have benefited from growing a pair and separating from the X-laws earlier than he did. As it stands my biggest gripe is how willing he was to swallow their propaganda even after witnessing how fucked up they are. It made him incredibly spineless which was part of his character but it was very uninteresting compared to Ren and Horohoro who had far more explored reasons for being who they were.

Really what Lyserg needed was a more complex backstory than just being an edgelord.

A uniquely meloncholic story. This weird sense of nostalgia for a time when I was a kid but from a different countries perspective. Character development that sticks. Art that improved by leaps and pounds but already started off good. And a diverse side cast of people who maintain releveancy.

My biggest problem was the rushed ending and how he introduced the whole Saiyan powerup mechanic. Rest of it was solid enough for me to ignore any minor problems.

Yomi cave wasn't getting abused. Compare how Yoh and Ryu powered up. Yoh had to enter the cave. Ryu had to brave a treacharous pass to increase his power. Each experience was unique and fit the character.

Then Ren dies and that was fine, but after that everyone just started doing only that to power up. It's lazy especially when Hiroyuki already showed that he can create tailored experiences for power growth. By the end death became a revolving door and it lost all meaning.

If I remember clearly, you can see how Chocolove ends up in hell, Yoh has to fight the Asakura antecessor that defeated Hao, Lyserg has to defeat a representation of his vengeance or something like that.

It's established since the first chapter that there are shamans that can call spirits from the afterlife and Hao introduced the concept of reencarnation, they're not asspulls.

I understand what dying means in the context of this series. I'm saying that I liked it before where everyone didn't have to go to hell to power up. At that point death became overused from where I sat. And you both are forgetting how everything played out on Mu. That shit was unforgivable. It relegated Faust and Jeanne into Pheonix downs and took the bite out of some of the fights.

Death/revival wasn't something that needed to be used as much as it did later on.

How so? Once the buddhist team was introduced people started dying for any form of character development or power boost. Hao resurrected everyone that had died on the beach. The Mu resurrections didn't mean anything in the greater scheme of the series, they were false tension because Hao was going to ascend no matter what. Trying to force the idea that "we only can revive X number of people" just gave an easy way to write two characters out of the conflict until the finale. And even when reading it as chapters were coming out it was boring to just see someone announce "we can't die during the fight with [Official name here] and then they died and Faust or Jeane just rez them.

It was lazy anon. Only two people needed to die and revive pre-mu. The author had already shown that he could make characters stronger without needing the crutch of resurrection. Near death states would have sufficed for everyone not Chocolove and Ren because Chocolove got a completely new spirit from his jaunt in hell. And Ren dying showed how he was trying to stop being a murdering psychopath.

Yeah, there was good encounters for Yoh in hell. But that doesn't make everything else better.

Re reading through the Epilogue chapters I really could see a Shin Megami Tensei themed RPG surrounging Shaman King with the Law/Neutral/Chaos route being represented by the X Laws/ Ghandarans/ and Hao.

I wish Gandara had gotten more development but I did like the side chapters explaining their leader and how she was already manifesting full body OS from childhood.

Has anyone here reread this manga? Wondering if it's worth it.
