They do pretty much completely different genres.
Urusei Yatsura is more than worth picking up but if you go in looking to compare then you'll be disappointed.

I don't hate her but she is very one note and all of her appealing traits are handled better by Lum.

The escalating super strength is funny though and I love Mendou so she helps get good stuff out of him

I think girl viewers champion Shinobu ecause she had her man stolen from her but realized she could do better and moved on with her life.

Lum is almost like a slapstick yandere. She doesnt zap the other girls but she does stalk them if it's an Atari helps a damsel in distress episode.

I miss the episodes where Shinobu would get jealous over Lum.

The anime is better, yeah. In the beginning it's pretty similar to the manga aside from some random story changes (like Lum taking longer to join school and many stories having more over the top endings, Mendou's family being even more over the top rich, like having their own personality army and Kintaro appearing more for some reason), but after a while (episode 30+) it starts featuring large original segments in the episodes that are often pretty different from Rumiko's own writing, which helps a lot giving longevity to the show and often add actual recurring elements that don't exist in the manga, so they don't even feel like filler.

The anime does some things better than the manga, and the manga does other things better (as in godai is less timid about j-j-jamming it in, though it is always implied but it is left intentionally vague in the anime). Also the anime skips some scenes about godais life outside of the house. Though I only read the manga here and there looking for parts that seemed to be different from the anime so I can't really give an expert opinion on the matter.
