I never understood that piece of the plot. So we've been told two things: A) That the ability to use magic is innate and is carried through your bloodline, flipping a switch and making you the master race above muggles, and that B) Recognizing or acknowledging this makes you evil, as does concern that if you don't keep your bloodline pure your children will be fucked over and not have your golden genes.

It's literally a story about checking your privilege.

There's no evidence that magical affinity is diluted by having children with muggleborns - half-bloods have exactly the same magical ability as pure-bloods, while magical ability occurs randomly in muggleborns all the time. When 'squibs' appear very rarely there's no evidence of it having any relationship to blood type - the examples of it occurring in the books where we know the blood linage come from pure-blood families (One of the Blacks, a distant Weasely cousin)

Based on that, we can conclude magic affinity is a completely dominant, if unpredictable, genetic trait - once you have it, it can't be diluted and would only disappear through the same random mutation that results in muggleborns. It's not a case of purebloods 'preserving' it so much as restricting it from others. In my headcanon, purebloods families were historically consolidated and maintained as a tradition after people realized that an exponential increase in the amount of wizards every generation was leading to a lot of family strife and chaos generally.
