Feels like girls from older anime were designed with actual input from female staff, or the writers weren't complete virgins who were ignored in school so they actually had an idea of how relationships worked.
I think to something like Golden Boy which absolutely had all the tropes which we see now like the MC being a young, powerful, genius moralfag who gets all the girls to fall for him, but it's not like SAO or any other generic harem where he gets it immediately without hard work. There are circumstances and struggles, antagonistic relationships even at the start but the catharsis and feeling of success is stronger at the end.
SAO is like, Kirito never had to work for anything he got. He was OP from the start, plot armor, retconning, admin access vs the final boss at the end of the series. His relationship with his waifu was never in-doubt. And it was way too fast and way too hard with the daughter suddenly coming into play.
I don't know how to sum up. Perhaps what I want to say is that the male MC and the female supporting cast were more equal in their roles instead of the MC being able to carry the entire show with his infinite powers, the women were there to say, "yeah don't forget us, we're important as well".

well i was basically an adult during the 90's so I'll explain things.

First of all they were still doing a lot of hand drawing with anime back during the 90's. Anime back then was much like Disney animation in America, it was considered a national treasure and something to aspire to. The writers of anime back then had time to flesh out a female character and give her a real personality, sense of self/purpose, and creditable backstory. Anime series back then also had time to completely tell a story about a person or character instead of jam-packing everything into 12 episodes.

Also the 90's were a time where the world felt that it was racing ahead. the year 2000 was upon us and we all felt that the internet was a sign that the world was going to advance technologically at a rapid, blinding pace and that we'd be traveling the stars by 200X or 20XX.

Equality would no longer be a dream and we'd all be singing kumbiya in a short period of time. If you watch the anime of the 90's you see how much of this is reflected in the female characters and the themes of the time.
