Why isn't there a bunch of history like isekais that aren't WWI or WWII?

Death March is shit but it's a guilty pleasure of mine, I'm kind of hooked in a few of the mysteries, like the goddess.
Some actually good Isekai is stuff like Dungeon Defense and Youjo Senki, though both of these can be wordy and pretentious at times.

Anybody got any good Isekai that isn't the author blatantly jacking off for X pages? All I want is no fucking cheat skills (I seriously never want to see that shitty writing excuse ever again). I just want a protagonist that simply works for what he gets.


I've been skimming light novels since I watched re-zero and they are the equivalent of someone playing a game with all the cheats on. nothing means anything because the hero never has to lose anything or really have to try to solve problems. Hell, you could probably have a better story if the overpowered MC treated the world like GTA and just tried to fuck every thing up as much as he could.

So how exactly, would one write a good Isekai story?

Mushoku Tensei for all the hate it gets nowadays did start off strongly and have an extremely good message that people overlook over the bad harem assembly: the fact that the main character earnestly regrets his mistakes, ACKNOWLEDGES HE'S GOT A NEW START, and from start to finish makes sure he's got the ability to make his life better with hindsight.

Even if he has an absurd cheat, he knows that unless he betters himself to cover his weaknesses and moderate his vices, he's going to end up the exact same nerd he spent forty years of his wasted life being.

It was quite refreshing to have a reincarnated protagonist realize how much a boon it is to be reincarnated aside from "omg i am going to get so much sweet pucci and/or power."

Another two strengths in Mushoku Tensei were the strong interpersonal relationship building between the friendships of characters. There's very few people you end up legitimately hating in Mushoku Tensei because they all have their flaws and strengths actually explored. The last I can pick out is shared somewhat with Overlord; MT actually has pretty good worldbuilding, albeit it's a tad claustrophobic (and doesn't seem like it arose organically at all in hindsight, particularly the skill ranking system).

I chalk a lot of that up in Mushoku Tensei due to Rudy being an extremely unreliable narrator.

A lot of the world DOES end up unexplained simply because Rudeus (vicariously the author) didn't care enough to explore it, such as why Rudy's pretty fucking okay with routine enslavement in society when they picked up Zenoba's dorf loli.

For all we know there's a lot of things that weren't possible simply because Rudy has ridiculous amounts of mana to actually experiment with.

It's not truly a plus since it really doesn't explain why things that are obvious to us aren't pre-discovered, but a lot of it runs on medieval momentum as well in a pre-scientific method world. We have to remember that the ancient Greek works of Galen were considered medical fact for fucking centuries until people decided to bite the criticism and do their own investigations.

Considering the fact that "magic just works" (and thus exploration of HOW it works is moot for most of it), probably some people made up bullshit in the MT world about how they thought it works to become more powerful and never explored it save for some geniuses here and there who weren't powerful enough to prove their own points.

What you need is thorough worldbuilding.The new world to which your MC will be sent needs to be interesting and engaging for the reader and for the MC.In most poorly written LNs the new world isn't explored in depth and is merely a playground for the MC instead of an everchanging world on which every character and factions have an impact.The readers have to experience it along the MC.

This can be avoided if you have the MC go through reincarnation normally, and skip through him being a wild dog in a modern city, to a lizard in a desert, to a bird in a mountainous region, then finally to a human in another world. The problem then becomes "How does he retain his memory". you could pull a "My collective lives flashed before my eyes". Right before he dies as a human, he could remember his past, then get conveniently saved by a childhood friend, or someone that becomes a mentor.

Figure out the technology settings first, how advanced is this world wueb it comes to technology, has magic influenced technology? How so? Can MC help influence it anymore? How so without leading to an unrealistic or vague backstory?
Also figure out the magic system for the world. Is magic caused by mana interacting with the current environmental settings, making earth magic impossible at sea and water magic impossible on land? Or is it more like summoning where you can send out swords from nowhere or make a pool of acid without having any of the ingredients etc.
Also make the MC have a somewhat large number of roads he can go down regarding jobs but then add in why he can't go down some for practical means. Has the ability to use magic? Too nad all magicians are greedy jews and won't offer teaching mana increasing techniques or spells unless MC is used as their experiment or joins an academy with a high price.
MC has talent as a swordsman after waving a wooden stick? Too bad, swords cost a lot and break easily without proper training and he's poor as shit.
MC can't be a swordsman or a mage? Some monks or a circus pick him up instead.

Then he can backtrack to other job classes later.

Also make the MC lose their first tournament but make the winner be a good sport and help with training in order to increase friendship feels.

My personal problem with economics type stories is that there's so much at stake for failure, the authors tend to make the MC steamroll everything and everyone, leaving no conflict to make the reader feel worried. Spice and Wolf was alright at this, but it wasn't a country management type story.

Adding on to others:

1) Characters should have depth instead of existing solely to make the MC look good and/or fill checkboxes. This is basic writing, but that's the purpose most of the cast serve in isekai anymore.

2) If the character doesn't have a plot relevant reason to be reincarnated, then don't do it. By plot relevant I mean "is there any reason this person could not be a local hero from that world?" Plot relevant does not just include having a random set of real world skills to lord over the peasants with and spend eight chapters on cooking.

3) If you must have them reincarnated from childhood, deal with it quickly. These young age variants are just getting outright weird. I have literally seen like seven year olds go off adventuring and it's just bizarre.

from my understanding of it, could be wrong, but he woke up in universe with the tutorial abilities they were adding into the game.

They gave players the abilities to see all the map and clear enemies from the map a limited number of times as a silly easy mode mechanic. When Satou wakes up, he fucks around a bit near a canyon full of dragons, kills them all with the tutorial ability and gets a shit load of experience and titles from it making him overpowered in the face of everything else he encounters.

The WN from there is mostly a slice of life adventure with Satou just wandering around, enjoying the world and occasionally stomping over a local problem before it interrupts his tour.

I ended up dropping it after 14 volumes/chapters. If you want a silly lighthearted adventure with no real dramatic tension this WN is basically that. Satou is never really challenged at any point and the only tension occasionally comes from people around him who aren't as broken.

I've read worse, Arifureta for example. Honestly I wouldn't keep reading Death March for the MC, the best character is Liza.
