In reality is dead, because no new materials, not funny, and a chore to watch.

I am not going to lie to you /a/, I dropped this after nearly dying of laughter from the first episode. When main girl comes in and starts doing her "impression" I busted out laughing at her facial expression that was combined with the corny music. I don't think I can sit through more of this show without laughing hysterically at the characters making baby faces at me while trying to tell a story.

It's not like rakugo spent its entire existence as a stiff form for performers to follow and for audiences to attend out of duty. People (at least in some parts of society) genuinely enjoyed it until tastes changed and other forms of entertainment became more prominent.

You could compare this to the state of some classical Western forms of music, theater and dance. Very few people care about them, and they survive on government assistance and small amounts of serious fans.
