How does /a/ feel about academic weebs?
They're okay, I guess.
Curious one night, I searched a few anime through my uni's library database and I was surprised how many academic journals there are covering anime. Some are pretty interesting to read.

Are there any publications on seasonal stuff?
>>152256217
They need to be fucking exterminated
>>152256217
Terrible. Can't get facts right and coast by their status from a time where information was much harder to come by and standards were lower.
Find people still interested in the hobby.

Why is there a pillar in the middle of the room?
>>152256217
I like the mature formal ones; not the annoying geeky nerdy ones you always see online like markiplier and all those fucking annoying white boy faggots who think they're being funny with their poorly written and annoying nerdy voiceovers.
There's a difference between the formal mature ones and the annoying immature ones. I disdain the latter.
>>152257826
That's the thing least worth publishing.

>he's so poor he can't afford to own a pillar of appropriate height to rest his arm while casually standing up in the middle of the room
These are REAL formal academic papers, studies and research in the anime and manga medium. THIS is REAL academic work on it; not stupid YouTube blogposts of fanboy amateurs who think they're right and do a shit job of research and don't know how to formerly review, research and critique works properly instead of giving biased reviews with horrible and terrible fallacies in between. These papers and journals are some good formal informative reading. Helps you learn and think. More importantly it's professional and not amateur. So you can actually take these researchers, their data and resources seriously. REAL academics and their research papers.

>academic weebs

This is just horrible... misleading the youth... what did they get their masters and phd in? Shit artistry? This is just fucking bogus. I bet Monkey Punch probably teaches a far better theory history class than this fucking scrub.
>>152256217
I gave this book a shot, though it was pretty useless.
I had to read Napier in class.
Worst-motherfucking-mistake-ever.
Imagine a reddit-feminist-dubfag with at best a moderate powerlevel (within mainstream) writing about anime as if she's an expert on the subject.
And then academia takes her fucking word for it because not many others have written about it in English.
I think I gave myself cancer reading that shit.
>>152260075
You took a class on anime? The fuck did you think you'd learn?
>>152260112
Allow me to reiterate.
Worst-motherfucking-mistake-ever.

>Can't get facts right and coast by their status from a time where information was much harder to come by and standards were lower
Excellent summation.
Most can't even read/speak any Japanese.
Anyone here read Mechademia?
There's some interesting parts about the superflat movement and its ties back to 18th century japanese art.
I actually got into anime from a book my mom bought me for Christmas one year thinking it was a how-to-draw book. Instead it was filled with a bunch of info on shit like hentai, harem tropes, etc.
Pic related.
I read a pretty good piece about Ghost in the Shell Innocence, can't remember what book it was in.
Made me appreciate the movie a lot more, now that I understand what the fuck Oshii was actually doing.

Does your mom regret her oversight?

Do you think only professionals can be academically minded, or that only the opinions of professionals are valuable / interesting?
I'm not arguing against the vast majority of anime youtubers being garbage, but you seem to be real hung up on the whole 'REAL' thing.
I don't think not being a professional or a 'Real academic' inherently makes them shit. Hell, most of them aren't even going for academic discussion so who gives a fuck. My question wasn't really referring to the sort of English speaking analysis community that exists, but I don't think they lack value, at least not simply because they're not professionals.

Not him but you are a retard that needs to graduate HS. Academic/peer reviewed work lends credibility.
>>152263293
>Academic/peer reviewed work lends credibility
Only to people who don't know graduates irl.
>>152263293
>Academic/peer reviewed work lends credibility.
I never implied that it doesn't, I never even implied that it wasn't more valuable than non academic work. Just that the idea that its the ONLY valuable work is a touch pretentious.
>>152259866
>Yfw the graduate work at 4chan as paid shitposter to keep the cuck visitor up.
Years ago I read a paper about FLCL that was pretty interesting, I'm sure I have it saved somewhere...
>>152262628
That is just fucking disgusting. The user you posted against is basically taking about garbage like that you posted. You seriously don't know he difference between corny poppy shit and professional academic art presentation. You seriously don't get it and missed the mark by an extreme long shot by a lot. They obviously know the difference professional academic work over amateur garbage like that. Major difference between them; trust me.

PLEASE DELIVER ANON
>>152263318
Hahha that is true. Usually graduates and post docs usually end up trashing each other and shit being in the know and understanding how that goes. Anyone under with poor academic skills don't know jack shit and can kill themselves with lack of credibility.
>>152263834
Alright man, sorry I hurt your feelings.
But you really seem to be putting words in my mouth, I haven't even read either of the books I posted. Nor did I claim to be some expert on the subject, but fuck me for being interested.
All I did was post about academic anime discussion and the 2d4u squad showed up and started talking about Markiplier.
I remember there's this one guy who's campaigning for moe and has published books and papers about topics like it. He's a Tokyo U graduate IIRC. I'll see if I still have it saved somewhere.

It's okay if you want to become middle management [with a window seat] in an anime broadcast studio environment, or a researcher at a production studio I suppose.
Who the fuck studies fucking anime at an academic level? That's pathetic.
