It IS a good standalone for me, at least. It has a horrendous start, but the payoff is good.

I just wish the lizardmen weren't shafted in later characterization. Bringing Zenberu to the Dwarves was underutilized; we should have at least gotten a Zenberu POV chapter or Intermission/epiloge at least to talk about his adventures and what he thinks of Ainz-sama.

Really, the lizardmen were great compared to the Disturbance in the Capital arc. The lead in and even the climax were pretty lackluster to read to me, albeit it advanced the overall plot very nicely once it was done.

Those were all good things that came from it, sure, but if there was to be a volume about Cocytus's character growth it would have made much more sense for him to do so interacting with characters that later become relevant. Instead we learn about a bunch of lizardmen, their friends, rivals, struggles, etc. and none of it matters in the least outside of volume 4. Cocytus's character growth is the only thing relevant past volume 4 and I cant help but feel like that could have been learned and still advance the plot in meaningful ways at the same time.
