I disagree. Kyoani doesn't know how to draw or animate animals. I noticed with the cats in phantom too. For as good as they are at cute character animation, they don't understand the anatomy or the way animals move. And when they try to draw them realistically they end up looking awkward and out of place among the rest of the scene.
