If they were going by popularity overall, Hayashibara would easily be in the top 3. If not #1. But you'd have to consider anime over the last 40+ years and not just recent. Hayashibara basically topped the carts every year from 1995-2004. For fuck sake, Rei was still topping polls when CardCaptor Sakura and Love Hina were out.
