I watched EOE for the first time on Sunday. Why did Shinji refuse Instrumentality?

Is it because Instrumentality was a dream and not reality? The reason he gave was that even though he was hurt, the memories he spent with friends were real, which seems like a pretty weak reason. It came from no where.

1.0 is a retelling of the first half. Ramiel fight is arguably better for some, others don't like the smaller changes. Personally i think it's too infested with that modern substandard anime feel that was lacking in the original.
2.0 leaves key plot points intact, but the way things happen is changed towards fanservice and dumbing down. Mari is introduced and does literally nothing the entire film, Asuka gets demoted to just a bitch, Rei's character is kidnapped, chopped up and replaced by a generic shy girl. Compare EoE and 2.0 3rd impact if you want a quick argument on anime going down the shitter.
3.0 is slow and confusing and set after a 15 year timeskip. It looks like a mess plotwise. It's all setup, so it can't really be judged before 4.0 is out.

Human Instrumentality was precisely that, SEELE tried evolving humanity with the closest thing to a "god" in their universe, the Seeds of Life created by 2001 An Space Odyssey aliens, Rei was more or less a sci-fi version of Jesus since she was part human part Seed of Life and her purpose was to die in Instrumentality to "save" (evolve) mankind.

SEELE wanted to be gods themselves and subordinate whatever Humanity was going to evolve to though, but their plans were frustrated by Yui Ikari that wasn't going to let some old power hungry fucks becoming gods so she takes their place.
