The scholar thing is meant to be ironic. He is supposedly smart, but no matter how many times the Earth is threatened by planet (and more recently, universe) busters, he doesn't proactively train. He can't protect anyone, even though he wants to. There's no other story purpose for Gohan being a scholar.

And the fact that "protecting the world" seems to be an increasingly taxing venture. Back when Goku was 12 you only had to be strong enough to destroy a military base. You got to take into the account that half saiysns don't lust for more power like the full blonnded saiyans do it's not in there nature when it comes to solve if you push them into a corner than yeah they will do what they can but ultimately fail at that since they don't have the battle genius or intuition of the full blooded saiyans.
The only expection is Future Trunks due the fact he comes from a much rougher timeline and where he has the fight first before anything else, but the other half saiyans fighting takes a backseat due to peaceful times and tend to rely on Goku and Vegeta.

Spirit Sword itself isn't bad, it's the fact it was rushed to hell with no build up and no explanation. The fact there was barely life on the planet didn't help either.

No. Not at all. I barely think Super is adhering to a timeline. None of the characters age and they all reset back to a "default" which is something they don't normally do in dragonball.

One thing Dragonball was good about is having time progress and characters constantly change. Everyone in super either just returns to Buu saga designs (Chi-chi, Goku) or is stuck in their BoG outfits (Goten, Trunks, 18, etc.)

It really doesn't feel like any time has passed since the beginning of Super to where it is now. Hell, the MOVIES do a better job of showing characters evolving and changing than the Super anime (or Manga for that matter) does.

Goten and Trunks are still kids, Marron's still a baby. Pan is the only one who's aged and that's simply from a fetus to a baby. And I'm willing to bet we won't see her get any older. Considering the fact that EoZ had everyone going grey, getting wrinkles and getting noticeably older I think it's pretty obvious Toriyama plans to keep everyone in their prime.

There's not enough of a push of the younger generation (Goten, Trunks, Marron, Bra and Pan) to really have a series about them. Other that it'd have to be about Uub and Goku. Honestly I think Super wants to use the old characters as much as they can and to do that they have to keep them young.

I like it because it's literally just Super Saiyan. Like... Gohan going SSJ2 was great and Goku going SSJ3 was a great moment. But my favorite form is always SSJ. Just basic super saiyan. It feels relaxed, subdued but still conducive for fighting. SSJB is just that but with a different aura.

God ki can be sensed by regular people if the user doesn't care about hidde it. In reRoF Goku (which ki is already "upgraded") and Vegeta (already stronger than Goku at this point) should train their abilty to "hidde" his ki even if they are god tier already.
