Back when the series was new and literally who characters like Sheele were still alive a pretty good amount of people on /a/ liked it. It was actually getting a good amount of praise on here because of it being "edgy" enough to kill off characters in the main cast.

I'd say people's feelings towards it went down when the author KEPT killing main characters off though and the shock value was long gone. I think Chelsea's beheading was the major turning point. The anime didn't really do it any favors either.
