I'd say the main issue is just that it's a small part of a bigger story, so when the other elements don't hold up compared to other ghibli works in particular it doesn't have much to stand on

I never liked it much honestly. It's not even just because I read the manga first, I did the same with Akira and like both. I think it's because it doesn't feel complete, like it's missing a ton of shit, whereas the Akira film changed the story in all the right ways to make it its own satisfying story.

OP is right, Nausicaa the movie feels dated, even in comparison to Castle of Cagliostro, which was made several years earlier.

The manga on the other hand has aged like fine wine. In fact it hasn't aged at all and probably will be considered a classic 50 years from now.
