There was a whole show where every episode had a narrator and it was shit. Some show trying to act like a historical documentary but never going anywhere. Wish I could remember its name.

Indeed true the first two seasons of hayate were great and they all had a narrator. The ones after were shit. Also the only good ova of hayate was the one were the narrator came back.

If the setting is a a school, it will almost certainly be bad.
If the characters are visually extravagant, it will almost certainly be bad.
If it's a juvenile genre like shounen, it will almost certainly be bad.
If it has a flavor of the year theme like isekai, it will almost certainly be bad.

There are some very good exceptions to these rules.
