I've heard it explained as Asuka realizing her own faults in Shiinji. He rejects instrumentality, and to confirm that people are again separate from each other, he hurts Asuka to see her reaction. As I mainly see it, it's about Shinji and Asuka's struggle to connect, which we see throughout the series with them and other characters as well. Their relationship is the most complex one in the series, question of whether she loves him or not (I think the term "love" in this case is usually taken negatively by people, who look at it from one side). What's funny, you don't really need to definitely decide if she loves him as a woman loves a man (although it's stupid to assume this, they are barely teenagers, still children, confused and all), you need to concentrate on their inability to understand each other at least a bit. We see Asuka's attempts to approach him sexually, she tries to kiss him to see if there's any connection, if he wants to hold her and she's utterly disappointed, she takes it really bad. Her attempts to make him act like a man (like he did in ep. 10, remember her reaction) are failures. That's the struggle. And his attempts to approach her (ep. 22) are failures as well. Asuka aggressively protects her from others, Shinji does so passively.
That's the Beaty of the last scene. People who subconsciously wanted to understand each other and help themselves finally manage to do so. Even though the World is destroyed, there's still hope for happiness as long as you live. One of the main themes of the show is hope, hope that even people who can't stand each other will bring down their barriers and understand each other and work together to survive and they WILL survive and they WILL find happiness. This was represented in episode 7, which was accused of being a filler episode by people who don't get Eva at all. Remember the password for the Jet Alone? That's right.

Anyone who watched the show could successfully argue that Rei is a better written character than Asuka. Of the main characters, there are no truly poor characters sans Kaworu who isn't a very good character. So Asuka, Rei, Misato, Shinji, Gendo, Ritsuko and so on are all good, realistic characters in their own right.

But if we're to compare Rei and Asuka, there's some differences and completeness factors that make Rei a better character. First of all Asuka is somewhat of an amalgam of Anno's favorite characters, here for instance we have a scene from Nausicaa which is directly plagiarized in NGE'e ep 22, and it's particularly bad since it's the cornerstone of the character. It's all a copy.

Rei on the other hand has some more impressive work behind it, including an analysis into the mind of the schizophreniac, and due to the detachment from author and character, there's a more pure expression of character. If a writer becomes to obsessed with the character he or she writes, it often turns out like a fantasy with no point. Which brings us to the next point: Rei features a very solid character arc, that begins at episode 1 and ends with the beginning. Thematically we're shown how a person like Rei can come to understand her environment and peers, and ultimately improve upon herself and take action. It's a noble effort as far as a character goes.

Asuka on the other hand, lacks this sort of development, and remains more or less static as a character in order to exemplify failure and serve as a foil to Shinji. She makes no important part of the plot or it's setting, unlike Rei who is a cornerstone of it among the "elite" of Evangelion. She is the beginning and the end for mankind, and Rei's own arc of understanding herself is tied intrinsically to this.

Asuka and Rei are ideologically opposed, and Evangelion uses this to great effect. Rei represents working with yourself and self acceptance, while Asuka represents escapism and self-denial.

They both live sad lives, deprived of much of the familial warmth a child needs, but they deal with it very differently. While Rei sees the truth for what it is, even if it so strongly belittles her own existence. She lives with it, even using it to her own advantage. It's exhausting on Rei psychologically, and as result she's almost dead in expression. She's sad.

Asuka is incapable of seeing the world for what it is, and instead relies on the lies and dreams fed to her by people who wish to control her. In order to alleviate her pain she resorts to escapism, using the EVA as a way to escape the real world. However this will never solve her problems, and because of this she is always taking her problems out on others. She is sad.

Both are tragic cases, but of the two only Rei is on the right track. The series then demonstrates how Asuka eventually crumbles and becomes a dead doll incapable of doing anything but being used and abused, even sexually as shown as in EoE. Rei on the other hand is met by rejection, setback and even death because of the path she's on, but despite every little setback, she grows stronger and wiser. Eventually, she is able to overturn her situation and thematically "defy" her bad luck in life: Gendo.

Choosing Asuka is choosing escapism, while choosing Rei is choosing real life and the hard truth.

Shinji had by himself, without Rei already approved the instrumentality's beginning. Before Rei made contact, the world was already pretty much destroyed, Japan was gone by the looks of it.

Rei overcame her problems, and then intercepted instrumentality and finally offered Shinji a choice. Does he want this or not? He didn't, and he was the victor of the day. As far as Asuka goes, we never know, there is only escapism in trying to figure out. Fan fiction and fanwank.

Everyone is able to come back, and in some scenes we see people floating up to a surface.

In life, Asuka never found her way. She was always helped by others, this also being part of the message. Someone who won't have the courage to accept the truth and themselves, will never be able to help themselves either. They will simply be burdens for everyone else.

Asuka was a burden for Shinji and Rei, who had to save her continuously and put up with her angry insults and attacks. They paid for Asuka's failures with blood, and Rei even was left alone in episode 23 because Asuka had become a useless puppet to be replaced by another pilot.

Asuka was a burden for Misato, who had to take care of her and ensure her safety.

Finally, Misato takes care of Asuka in EoE and sends her off to somewhere safe, and then Asuka is helped by the soul in EVA02. Despite all of that, Asuka loses the fight, and Shinji's instrumentality saved Asuka's life.

So without Shinji destroying the world, and Rei intercepting him to give him a choice, there would be no Asuka at the end. There would just be meatloaf inside an EVA.

Watch the last two and EoE. From what I got out of it, is that the 25+26 were a result of hitting the brick wall of their budget and having to work with what they had left. Also, it was the outcome of Shinji accepting instrumentality in the end. EoE was more of the intended ending, with some changes here and there. I wouldn't disregard 25+26 because they include dialogue which wasn't totally covered in EoE that you would probably like to watch/hear.

most of us can generally agree that the Rebuilds can be totally skipped, but if you really like EVA, give it a shot. Anno still has to "close the book" with the rebuilds and thankfully his team is finally back to working on it.
There's the whole "Rebuilds are a continuation" theory also. Wouldn't be surprised if Anno does some cuhrazy stunt like that, but nonetheless, it's interesting to see the "what could have been," with the Rebuilds.

I wonder why there's such aversion for NGE manga. Although I was raised watching the original series and I do prefer them to the manga, I would honestly say Sadamoto has a much saner mind than Hideaki Anno, and his drawing style is superb.

Oh boy, another thread about the dullest franchise in the history of anime franchises. Seriously each episode following the boy Eva pilot and his pals from NERV as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of pyschoanalyis, all to make science unscientific, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Anno blew the entire budget; he made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody? Just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for his depression. The Evangelion series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the girls were terrible. As I watched, I noticed that every time the main character faced a problem, the writers wrote instead that the character "must not run away."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Anno's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Evangelion by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are watching Evangelion at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you watch "Evangelion" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

Let me start by saying that Ayanami Rei isn’t even really a person. She’s a monstrosity made out Yui Ikari’s DNA. The connection between her and Shinji Ikari comes from Shinji being interested to her smell because it reminds him of his mother and the fact that his father is giving her positive attention instead of him. Her personality type in the original anime was a response to the love of typical emotionless and submissive anime girls, and why something like that wouldn’t work in real life. Both the manga and the movie versions replaced that with Shinji straight-up warming her up and making her more human than either her, her in-show clones, or the thousands of direct copies of her in other popular anime.

Rei is by far one of the worst girls in the show, maybe even just in anime altogether, because that was the point of the character. She’s the choice of people who want to escape from human interaction and want a pet to mold however they see fit. Which is why she’s great for a spineless loser like Shinji.

Lol plebs, the ending is a masterpiece, and Evangelion IS a love story, on multiple different fronts. The characters are also trying to love one another while also not getting hurt.

Kaji x Misato is synonymous with Shinji x Asuka, albiet as adults instead of children. They share deep seated insecurities, but outwardly they deal with them differently, and those puzzle pieces don't match all the time.

Shinji's low self esteem stopped him from questioning 'why does she really want to kiss me'. Asuka's low self esteem prevents her from understanding why he couldn't hold her. If either of them had made a move, it would have likely ended with a sex scene and corresponding romance. Why would Asuka even be mad at Shinji for not holding her (a further projection of Kaji's rejection) if she didn't care about him? Research attachment disorders and you'll find that all the characters reject those who love them out of fear of rejection. Its the same reason Misato rejects Kaji even when she loves him.

To say it isn't a love story, is buttdevastatingly simple. The ending, where Asuka is being choked, happens for this reason. Shinji comes back from the LCL, and upon seeing Asuka back first, it hits him that they are exactly the same (why they both returned), and he is angry at her, for 'failing' him, for not 'helping' him love himself. When Asuka raises her hand to touch his face, like Lilith and his mother both did, he realizes that the love that exists within them also exists within Asuka, and all women to a degree. Overcome with emotion, he cries as the walls surrounding his emotions come tumbling down. In the final scene, Asuka also realizes this, and after they FINALLY make a meaningful connection, she still can't help but to be her defensive self, which is why she says she feels disgusting. The last line is intentionally ambiguous, so we question whether she's talking about herself, Shinji, what he's doing, what she's doing, or all of it combined.
