I think this might have been my favorite episode to date. I loved all the winter/snow symbolism in both the OP and the episode itself.

Pretty good episode, new OP & ED are good too. Didn't really expect that Gotou guy to be a shogi player too but it makes the story a lot more interesting so I'm fine with it.

In the manga its later shown he's actually well respected, is actually faithful to his (comatose and hospitalized) wife, and most of what we saw of him in the beginning was through Rei's distorted viewpoint. The sister is actually a low self esteemed slut trying to get him to sleep with her and he treats her more like a kid/unreasonable child while refusing to do anything sexual with her out of loyalty to his wife.

I've read the manga, I'm aware of all this, but I would dispute the "well respected" part - who have we seen respect him? We haven't even seen him socialize with anyone - he was apparently friends with Rei's adoptive dad at one point but they're obviously not in contact anymore. All the younger and/or less talented guys are afraid of him, and the older/high-level guys don't seem to respect him, either - Shimada thinks of him as immature and narcissistic, Yanagihara's the dismissive exasperation I was referring to (he also comments that Gotou just scares everyone away), the chairman treats him like an unruly kid, etc. He's like a black sheep more than anything.
