This. It's really crazy how much better Rakudai is despite having almost the exact same premise. Ikki is just miles, MILES better than Ayato. I like watching shitty battle harems like Bahamut and Infinite Stratos, so I wasn't going to be very critical about either show when they were airing, and I did enjoy Asterisk for what it was worth, but Rakudai was just flat out good.

that being said, i still enjoyed it. it was mindless entertainment, and that's the most a show like asterisk can ask to be

it had more side characters and focused on those characters more than the majority of battle harems though, which was a nice surprise. they were also the drivers of a lot of the political subplot the series had, which i also enjoyed because it was less mindless than the rest of the harem antics

take your pick, they're exactly the same show but with different names and skins and they will fill the exact same niche for the viewer who seeks them out. i watched both and i liked both and ranking one above the other is 99% of the time related to which series your personal taste decided had the better girl

7/10 overall. Not great or shit.

MC was in average and in the middle ground. Main heroine is exceptionally quite good character and deserves to be in a better series. The harem in general ranges from meh to cool, with cool mostly coming from side heroines. Battles are a miss and hit, with more of the former, but a few of the latter were pretty great with spent budget. Production value is above average and the music as well. The OPs&EDs were really good though.

i felt the cgi that was used, the robot fighters in particular, worked in the same way that the cgi in yuyuyu did to deepen the separation between the cgi characters and the 2d ones. you don't need to know anything about their characterization or disposition to make them noticeable or unsettle you, because the cgi becomes part of their character

not entirely necessary considering ar-d was just a miniature gundam and not an eldritch killing machine the size of a skyscraper but hey
