I can't really see a way SW could disappoint Dark Cutie besides dying. Everyone already knows that SW is fated to live forever with an ever growing guilt burdening her soul. Dark Cutie is already ensnared by the stories of the MG Hunter and her fight with SW only solidified that image in her mind. Anime's alright. The arc the anime covered is the shortest of the whole series. It does some things better by showing stuff that was otherwise omitted in the original arc or added in later in side chapters, but it does some things worse by ruining the tension by showing those things typically before a character dies. It also doesn't do Snow White justice in how she's depicted. Also, some deaths were changed, but those aren't too big (aside from Calamity Mary's).

The next arc and everything past it blows the anime arc out of the water, easily. Characters are better developed, setting is more developed, deaths become more varied and have more impact, and you never really see the twists coming.

It doesn't help that many anime adaptions have to cut details and scenes out, edit other scenes to make things flow better, etc. to not just fit the arc in 12/13 episodes, but also wrap it up well enough that they don't set themselves up and leave it too open-ended unless a second season was planned from the start.

I think another important thing to note is going from text to visual, it becomes harder to fit in a lot of inner dialogue, and so you see character development more externally, which is a real weakness to it.

That's true and I've fallen for it many times, but I'll hold out that this is the exception. To make the most basic comparison, it becomes a sort of magical girl Jojo with a bit of Code Geass once they drop the death games for good in the second arc. The second is better than the first, but three and on is where it shines. They're quick reads too.
