Asuka sees Shinji as the only boy left after Kaji turns her down and every other guy at school is 'beneath her'. But she isn't in love with him by any means. Not even by the standards of a high school crush. A major point in the plot is that she actually grows to transfer all of her frustrations onto Shinji, as Shinji keeps surpassing her as a pilot and even on a social level near the end. These frustrations also manifest as sexual frustrations (which she doesn't understand). But when she tries to act on those sexual frustrations, she finds Shinji repulsive.

Misato likes Shinji more than Asuka does. Misato at least has pity on him, feels empathetic towards Shinji for his daddy issues and has this weird mother complex going on. Asuka just outright hates Shinji. And it just gets worse as the show goes on.

Before anyone trashes Anno again, I will say this:

Anno is actually a really nice guy. Despite being afraid of being around kids, he gave a two day lesson on animation to a sixth grade class in his old elementary school just off the cuff and took them to interview his school friends and parents on him for a project It's on YouTube, just look it up.

He's actually somewhat cute, like the kind of cute you would call a kid who is pretending he's a superhero. Which he completely is.

He made a movie while in college which was a parody of Ultraman, in which he WAS Ultraman.

Evangelion is actually his major life's work and basically his child, NGE was one of his first projects he could completely call his own, maybe besides a few of his Gainax works, like Nadia. He kinda made Rebuild to make NGE polished and basically give it a rebirth.
