It was one of the first TV anime to make distinctive use of digital effects, which KyoAni now puts into everything they make. It's a good looking show by current standards but back then it was fucking mind blowing; it's easy to remember it as one of the best looking shows ever without realizing the novelty has nearly become standard.

Plus the writing and direction is really nice if it's your kinda thing; it's not a crappy show, it's just one without wide appeal.
