Maybe that would be true later on in the series once Hanekawa had dealt with her severe emotional baggage, but during Kizu, and basically all the way up until Tiger, Araragi and Hanekawa would have likely not been very good for each other, hell, with all the crap Hanekawa was going through, I can say with confidence that her not going out with anyone until she dealt with it was the best outcome.

As it is, during Kizu up through Neko black and Bake, I'm pretty sure Hanekawa waited for either Araragi to ask HER out, which he would never do because he's a social retard + he puts Hanekawa up on a pedestal and would never think to be in a romantic relationship with her ((which is also mostly her fault because of the angel act she put on)) or so she would have some time to make Araragi into a more suitable person for her, and of course, that waiting around let Senjougahara swoop in and get the prize while Hanekawa was waiting around.

It was for the best though, despite whatever you like/dislike about either girl, Araragi needed a girl who is as forceful and ((mostly)) blunt like Crab is, because he isn't really the type to take charge in a romantic relationship.

not to say that he should be with cat or any other girl, but really crab being his girlfriend didn't really do much, and I would say it kinda limited the options of the show some more.

heck, as mentioned, araragi still continues to fooling around and has basically kissed almost all the little girls in the show. in fact, I think the only time their relationship had some significance was in getting hanekawa and nadeko jealous resulting in some oddity problems.

Bottom line is that Araragi had and still has, a very fucked up relationship with Hanekawa.

People say she tricked him with the facade, but literally all the time in Kizu, she said, "no, I do things because I feel like it, and you'd be disappointed if you saw the real me".

Gahara even says it herself, Hanekawa shits on herself a whole lot, even Ougi says it.

If there is anything that stopped Araragi and Hanekawa getting together, it's because they didn't love themselves. Hitagi doesn't love herself either, but latched hard on a passive Araragi, and despite the unhealthiness of that, it worked. Primarily because Nisio hasn't really tested the relationship that much. It's not like Hanekawa will fight against it, and Shinobu doesn't have to, because Hitagi will let her feel up her boyfriend on the grounds of Shinobu being his "treasure". She is attracted to Hanekawa anyway.

It's pretty fucked up objectively, a counselor would say the whole thing is really just a powder keg waiting to explode. It's a good thing embracing her emotions has only bolstered Hanekawa's already inhuman stoicism.

Araragi and her meet up frequently in between the story and he seems to really like her, love her even. Wether there are better girls for him or if some other girl is relevant to the story or not, will not chance how Araragi feels.

Though in Araragi's case, he is a unreliable narrator. Take the shit from Shinobu- mail for example. He still believes that nothing has changed since Kizu and that Shinobu is unhappy. But in Ougi Dark

Araragi and Shinobu's bond gets broken and Araragi believes that Shinobu will be happier back in her adult form, separated from his shadow then bouned to Araragi. He acts surprised when she shits on his expectations and asks to be bound again to Araragi as a little girl.

I don't even like Hanekawa much but I still preferred those two as a duo to Araragi & Gahara as far as entertainment is concerned. Her tsundere-ness isn't funny, Araragi constantly praising her for how amazingly normal she is got old pretty quickly, Araragi has better banter with pretty much everyone else in the show and Shaft cutting tons of dialogue out for other characters didn't even manage to change that (the anime downgraded Koyomi's & Kanbaru's genuine friendship into a weird mostly one-sided thing on Kanbaru part while she makes Araragi feel semi-uncomfortable for example, and people still find that more interesting than what we get with Gahara) She is just a 7/10 girl in a cast of 8/10s and above.

While her development made her awesome, the majority of the time in the plot, she was a sagely friend who just happened to be hot as well. And as we learned from Tiger, her advice was genuine and a lot of times, very helpful.

She was almost too good of a companion, so Nisio basically made her the shadow heroine of the series who is privy to larger happenings and does her own shit in the background post Tiger.

Nishio kinda fell into the trap that many shounen romcom mangaka fall pray to. He failed to write the intended lead girl as best girl and best fit. What makes it even more of a mistake, is that he already had written Bakemonogatari, so I don't know what kind of lunacy drove him to write how Araragi and Hanekawa have this amazing chemistry going on in the prequel. From an in-story POV Araragi sure as hell doesn't know that he has already hooked up with a different girl in a future book, so it ultimately feels like Nishio simply fucked up when he wrote Kizu, as far as continuity coherence goes.
