What a letdown this one was. And for that matter, Aoi Hana was also kind of a letdown. Both of them start strong, but somewhat stumble at the finish line, though Aoi Hana not as much.

Funny thing is, when Bloom Into You goes full drama it becomes as hilarious as your favorite run of the mill drama. It's only good when it's subtle and comfy. If that is the best ongoing work yuri can offer in terms of aesthetic merit, then it is really telling of the overall standard of the genre (or in any others, since it's probably one of the few romance manga that is not pure shit).

I think the market is just that small. Japanese yuri fans buy shit they don't even like that much, desperately sent filled surveys to publishers showing that there's a demand for yuri but at the end of the day all we have is just a niche within a niche. It can't sustain a reasonable profit.
I believe the future of profitable yuri lays within alpha+yuri concept to scoop those who don't mind yuri to an extent where they'd be comfortable with reading/watching something plot driven but with lesbians. Unfortunately, all of attempts to do this failed pretty hard.

1. During the training camp Sayaka learns the true "relationship" between Touko and Yuu. Feeling she isn't fit for the role anymore she orchestrates for her and Yuu to swap roles in the play. Yuu ends up getting really into her new role but it's just a play so there's no way it's serious! It's just he feelings of her character...right?
