How cruel do you have to be to condemn completely out of nowhere an innocent character to literally the worst possible fate that can ever be imagined, and then immediatly forget about her without the event having any sort of lasting impact on the characters that witnessed it or even the rest of the story? The MC whose only praise has been being "human", and who ignored his orders before because he was worried about the girl he also just met, tried to lift a giant bolder with his hand and basically gave up his life for her. And then he left the other girl to eternal torture after a token gesture to not even bother about it right after. He wasn't rational, his actions are all over the place.

But it helps when the villain isn't also rational. He could have very well "now that I finished with this girl who was already dead anyway, let me finish you off quickly" but he just left. In the end all those whimsical actions just ended up well for everyone, except for the designated sacrifice to show the villain is serious (except not about his plan, just about pointless vengeance against an unrelated someone).

It's the same problem that Attack on Titan has where they kill off characters in the most gruesome way yet forget to give them good depth and development before you do so.

Deaths of major characters is interesting not just because it stirs emotions in the audience after they got attached to a character.

It's interesting because when done right it changes the dynamic of the characters that the dead character was close with.

The audience and/or the characters need to feel impacted by the death of a major character in either a positive or negative way.

Olga's death did neither. Not only was the audience turned off by how hamfisted it was, none of the other characters really cared that much either.

Both MC-kun and Mashu were like "Oh shit she's dead. That sucks.", and then move on like nothing happened.

And that's why Olga's death was fucking pointless and stupid.

I won't deny that making her a cute girl made her more endearing by default, but it really could have been any other character. It doesn't even need to look human, actually. I remember being horrified by what happened to Squealer at the end of Shinsekai yori, but as horrible as it was I could get over it because the story itself was aware of how terrible his fate was. It affected subsequent events as well as being the source of moral anguish for the other characters, as you would expect from normal functionning human beings. It felt like the intended part of a well designed whole.

Here, not only is Olga's fate unimaginably more cruel than in the previous example, but it also gets immediatly forgotten and has no influence on anything or anyone whatsoever. I get that the "good" guys on her side couldn't do anything (although they could have at least called her name to not let her die completely alone in absolute terror), but then you can't possibly expect anyone who's not a sociopath to witness such a thing and not be deeply affected by it, whether they want it or not. And from a story standpoint, you can't expect anything to matter after that, since the single worst possible thing that could ever happen to anyone already did, and no one in-universe cared. It makes no sense and feels like it was just put in there for mere shock value. Worse even, it feels like whoever wrote this didn't really understand what putting the words "eternal" and "torture" together implies. To me, it just feels like bad writing in all aspects.
