It's actually nothing like SAO, and I don't get how you came to this conclusion.
The abject horror of Subaru's position is something that the anime got perfectly correct, and it's one of the reasons why I hate that this is an adaptation. You don't know what the witch is planning, but the final episode of season 1 is both satisfying and deeply disturbing, because you hear Sloth saying the exact same shit in his monstrous form that Subaru was screaming at Emilia during his breakdown in the capital, except he was talking to Satella. It both alludes to how much Subaru has grown in the interim time and puts some uncomfortable hints out as to why he was transported to this world in the first place.

I don't expect to get the same thrill from a fucking translated web novel, and yet talking about this show on /a/ is impossible for anyone who doesn't want to read it, because spoiler tags are difficult. I look forward to watching the rest of this and not talking to you twats about it.

There are a lot of things i did like and a lot of things i really didn't like.
Subaru's autistic suffering is interesting to watch, but the world is fucking bland and cookie cutter. rarely is the actual geology of the world explored and we're often just left to imagine it from tiny hints in the context of conversations. Half of the cast is fucking lame as well. Emilia is down right infuriating to watch because of the plot device (witch power?) that prevents Subaru from making any interaction between him and her interesting aside from a lap pillow here or there. Ram gets shuffled into the actual cuck-corner and left to die because there needed to be a catalyst to up the ante after Subaru's constant deaths got boring

It would have been very hard for Subaru not to grow as a character given that he basically begins the series as a petulant manchild and also that he either causes or does little to actively prevent some of the worst things that happened to him.

It doesn't particularly make the series better though. Like, if a character appears to has little redeeming factors i.e. in terms of background (like, if a really good reason is provided by the author to explain exactly why Subaru ended up becoming such a horrible person) or even through other aspects of their personality, then it becomes really hard to actually care about that growth, let alone feel invested in it.

I see where you are going, but I disagree with your opinion. The more weak, annoying a character is, the greater payoff it is when said character be humbled and matured. I think one good example of this is Tales of Abyss's MC which is also a huge man child, but where the payoff of his maturity is satisfying.

Certainly, it's better than seeing a character you initially love getting stagnant or even worse, flanderized. I think Konosuba run a great risk of doing precisely that.
