Were all the Pure Illusions belonging to specific members of the cast?

Episode 2 is most likely Uexkull
Episode 6 is obviously Irodori
Episode 7 might be as well Papika
Episode 8 is either Hidaka or Bu-chan
Episode 9 is probably Yayaka considering pic related

My guesses for the rest would be:
Episode 3 or 5 is Sayuri
Episode 13 hyperreal world is Salt (Sayuri as Mimi's replacement, a world where all the Pure Illusion shenanigans never happened), brought with him upon Mimi's through ELPIS and acidentally trapping Cocona

That leaves the question: Whose is the Pure Illusion from episode 1, which one is Sayuri's, if 8 is Bu's/Hidaka's does any PI belong to the other guy, and was any of the shown PI the one Salt's dad lost his marbles in?

My guess is 3 for Hidaka and 5 for Sayuri.
>>
>>151828247
Sayuri's is 3. Check the posters in her room in 13.
>>
>>151828247
The first one I think was Papika's 7 was Cocona's.
>>
>>151828247
>>151828357
Sayuri also knows martial arts.
>>
>>151828247

3 is 100% Sayuri because of the posters.
5 is a big mystery. Could be just a generic "background schoolgirl" world.
1 is Cocona (sweet snow, blue sky=blue hair).
>>
>>151828247
The first one is probably Coconas, the emptiness reflecting her inner self.
>>
>>151828247
>a world where all the Pure Illusion shenanigans never happened
All the characters talking about not being able to go back to PI tells you that it never happened for them? If anything, it did and the PI was meant to be a bleak false ending.

The first PI fits Cocona well and episode 7's could well be Cocona's and Papika's shared PI like the mecha one fitting both Hidaka and Bu-chan.

They don't belong to a specific person, but the events, concepts, emotions, locations and characters that are currently influencing that character and their general state of mind. In this sense they all basically belong to Cocona.

>>
>>151829063
That's just a school uniform that looks similar. Cocona had one like that in the PI, too.

5's PI could be the twins'. The whole time loop and warped rooms thing was part of the defense mechanism, but the gokigenyous seemed to be native to that world. Creepy girls with expressions that are hard to read and keep watching you in the background.
>>
>>151829233
I don't think it's so necessary to connect these posters to Sayuri's character specifically. It could be just an instance of "in this world, all those references you saw before are just fiction" and Sayuri's room being the only room that they posters could have possibly been in is incidental.
>>
>>151829350
She has no poster of any reference that isn't present in episode 3 (Shining, Marimite, Flashman, Eva, Moomins, Nausicaa, etc.) though.
>>
>>151829337

I also thought it might be the twins PI. They're mostly absent in the episode, and the first time they appear, it's a Shining reference.
>>
>>151829621

>>
>>151829708

The gokigynoids are victims of the defense trap not a natural part of it.

>>
>>151829708

Incest, lesbians, same thing really.
>>
>>151829550
Okay, that seems plausible - but still, there's nothing in what we learn about Sayuri's character that would make her more suitable for the Mad Max world personality-wise.

I'm still not sure if it's Hidaka's or Sayuri's. I'd say that episode 8 is Bu-chan's solely, as Pops is his persona and the pervy low-angle shots are pretty much Bu-chan's perspective.

>>
>>151829903
The Mad Max PI with the two planets also reflects Flip Flap's situation against the KKK. Sayuri knows that they're underpowered against their enemy who could trample over them any time they felt like it. The chuuni potato could fit both of them, but the fact that it made them transform into magical girls and didn't give them giant robots instead makes me think it's Sayuri's. There weren't enough robots or mechanical parts in the episode to fit Hidaka who's all about that.

Okay, so after rewatching the sendoff in episode 5, Sayuri is most enthusiastic towards the whole henshin thing. I'm sold on ep 3 being Sayuri.

That means we've solved 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 (episodes 10-13 either revisit old PIs or show Mimi's, Salt's or the one of Salt's dad).

That leaves the following PIs to solve:

- g̵̏́̾ͩ͌̚҉̻̖̘̬r̖̹̠̼͙̟̜̄̔̀E̛͕̮̰̯̺̤͙̔̑ͭ͘3ͣͣ͆͢͏̩͔̫́ͅT̰̹̺̑̾̾̆̾̔̒ͪ́̕Ỉ̦͍̦̘̳̦̮ͣ̀n̶͑ͩ͞҉̖ͅg̨̖͍͙̠͚͚̲̫̉̈́ͦ͊̕͡s̘̬͗ͫͩͤ̏

- the two recapped at the beginning of episode 5 (blocky world with a weird capsule looking thingy, and Jack and the Beanstalk one)

- the space one, with Yayaka & co. dressed up in astronaut suits (that one didn't have a shard, though)

Free characters without a PI assigned yet: Hidaka (since 8 is purely Bu-chan's), Toto, Yuyu, Nyunyu.

Ideas?

So, the preview of episode 13 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGclmyl9Rq8) didn't include any scenes from the actual episode. What was the meaning of this then? Does it mean that the "real" PI looked like this to Cocona (she couldn't tell the difference, after all).

It reflected Yayakas strong feelings pretty well, the memory dome trapped her and Cocona for their very personal fight and seperated Cocona from papika so Yayaka could take her on on her own. You could describe this PIs whole theme as "seperation", because the episode deals with Yayaka getting pushed aside.

Episode 1 is Cocona. It's a quiet, barren world, with sky as blue as Cocona's hair.
Episode 2 is Uexkull. It's a world where the colors are different, everyone becomes a rabbit, cages are terrifying, and a vaccum cleaner is the most scary thing imaginable.
Episode 3 is Sayuri. It's not obvious at first, but during the sendoff in episode 5 she's most enthusiastic about the henshin action, she claims to know martial arts in episode 11, and her room in episode 13 is filled with posters of Mad Max, Sailor Moon and Sukeban Deka.
Episode 4 - no Pure Illusion. The ones skipped and recapped at the beginning of episode 5 could belong to Hidaka (the one with a space shuttle) and Grandma (the Jack and the Beanstalk one?).
Episode 5 is Toto and Yuyu. It takes their innate creepiness to the next level.
Episode 6 is Irodori.
Episode 7 is Papika. Cocona meets different aspects of Papika, relations she could have with her - but none of them are the "real", whole Papika.
Episode 8 is Bu-chan. Pops is his alter ego in the Tron world, and Pops's short height corresponds to Bu-chan's own perspective. It also explains the low-angle shots and swimsuits.
Episode 9 is Yayaka. The Dark Knight-esque ceiling from the Pure Illusion is the reflection of the Asclepius locker room, also memory dome. The space PI where they wear astronaut suits - not sure, might be NyuNyu. The portal was set up for her, initially, the PI is empty of shards just like her character is empty of purpose story-wise, and her main attribute is a goddamn flying saucer.
Episode 10 - no Pure Illusion. Mimi invites Papikana to hers.
Episode 11 is a glimpse of the Pure Illusion of Salt's father, catalyzed by ELPIS.
Episode 12 - no new Pure Illusion, we revisit all the ones from episodes 1, 2, 3 and 8
Episode 13 is Salt. He forces his PI onto Mimi's using ELPIS, and later Cocona gets trapped inside it - a grim, depressing world where Pure Illusion is lost and Sayuri became a replacement mother figure for Cocona.

Not enough to support that, I don't think. They don't seem like they even have the imagination to spawn a PI. If anything I think it is the yurifag writer's PI.

>Episode 7 is Papika.
I was pretty sure 7 was also Cocona, as it was a quiet, empty world for her to reflect on her feelings for Papika in and it was a perfect recreation of the town she lives in, which Papika would not know much about.

>Episode 8 is Bu-chan.
I still take the easy answer and say both Hidaka and Bu. Hidaka 100% at least, due to his scenes with Sayuri in that episode.

I don't think trying to figure out the ones in 4 or the space one in 9 is possible, just not enough information about either the PI or the side characters they could be until the OVAs.

Seems FlipFlap is getting a minor amount of recognition. Crunchy is doing some "best ___ of the year" awards with only like 4-6 options per category, and FlipFlap is one of four nominated for best animation of the year.

It won't win obviously. It is up against YOI and Mob. But it's nice that it got noticed for anything, especially since 80% of every category is just YOI, Mob, fucking Kabaneri, and Hero Academia. But the important thing is someone somewhere in that crowd managed to convince everyone else making nominations that FlipFlap was one of the four best animated shows in the entire year.

I hope it at least beats Kabaneri so it won't be not even top 3.

This anime sucked and was full of shallow yuri bait and bad characters.

Is it just me or did the last two episodes feel really rushed, or at least awkwardly paced? It seemed like they had either not enough or too much content for 2 episodes, so they minimized and maximized stuff until they got it to 2 episodes, but on the other hand it felt like if they had another episode it would have been able to flow better regardless. The Real-World PI needed it's own episode, if nothing else. Honestly it felt like a shallow end, and kind of soured me on the show overall a little.

Me too, specifically the last two episodes. I didn't even mind episodes 10 and 11 as much as some did, I actually loved them because they were mile-a-minute fast-paced and managed to infodump in an interesting and unboring way.

I did like the Penguindrum stuff in Episode 13 though.

I'm aware a lot of people see it as a bad ending, but I wasn't sure if it was actually just bad or if it was just way too poorly paced. It really almost feels as if some of the plot points they didn't wrap up were cut for time for more fluff in episode 12 when they still didn't have enough to fill both episodes.

It seems to be mostly agreed that the last few episodes were in some way lacking, but for most people not enough to spoil the show.

I plan on rewatching the entire show soon to sort out my own thoughts on the ending since I'm still not really sure how I feel yet, as I watched it while it was airing.
>>
>>151837247
I actually agree with you. I just wanted to make fun of the way you started your post. One more episode could have evened out the pace a lot. Up to episode 10 the show was phenomenal for me and as 11 and 12 were airing I couldn't help but feel less involved because the three main characters that had been built up so well so far were now in the background in favor of rushed charactarization for Mimi and Salt. Especially Salt could have been developed better over the course of the show.

Those episodes still had great moments and many anons agreed that some of the random events that happened with the Flip Flap staff could have been cut to make the important drama stand out more. Apart from MUSCLE. That shit was cash.

I feel they were forced to cram too much content into the last few episodes. At the last minute they realized they had a ton of expositing they still had to do right while they were running out of time to get the episodes out, and at the same time they had to cram in an (overly) ambitious final fight. As a result it all became a mess, but as messes go I think they at least got their plot points across even if the presentation had to take a back seat.

Honestly, I think the finale suffered the least from the production crunch. It was clearly always intended to be a frenetic succession of exciting moments and it delivered that very well.

Some people are unhappy that they didn't get ALL THE ANSWERS, but at some point you have to recognize that the show simply never intended to give them to you. That's not a product of a directorial fuckup, or corporate meddling or practical realities of production. This was simply the vision that the creative minds behind the show had for its finale, and they certainly didn't fail in its execution. If you have lingering questions, it's because they wished for you to have those questions and explore the answers yourself rather than be given them.

All of the show's plot was explained or resolved by the end of episode 12 anyways, leaving only the final confrontation with Mimi and the resolution of Cocona and Papika's relationship as the plot threads left to cover. They got an entire episode dedicated to them. I don't know how that could leave you unsatisfied unless you somehow hoped they'd give us a "just friends" ending or handwave the final villain and focus on something else less climactic or pertinent for 20 minutes. They brought everything to a head, made everything clear, set the stage and then gave us spectacle. What else exactly were you expecting out of the ending?

She was meant to illustrate the Deep PI mechanic that later applied to Mimi.

Basically, Iroha had two sides to her character, characterized by what memories they were associated with. Blue Iroha was associated with her homelife, where she drew pictures to escape from her parent's constant fighting, was neglected by them and made to feel shame over her "strange" art. Orange Iroha was associated with her time around Auntie, where she had fun, felt her drawings were validated and made them to share good memories and feelings with those she cared for.

Orange Iroha was buried down deep in her psyche due the traumatic memory of Auntie's tragic descent into dementia, leaving the Blue aspects of her mind to characterize her identity. This is the melancholy Iroha we see in episodes 1-6, who laments that she can only draw when the day is "just right" (when she's feeling down about something and needs to cope) and remains insecure about the product of her painting --think back to the way she approached Cocona in episode 1 over the painting in the hall.

Their meddling in her PI resolved the trauma surrounding her memories and allowed her Orange qualities to return to the surface. She was not throwing away her paintings because they 'broke' her. She just didn't feel the need to cling to them anymore because that Blue aspect of her had been satisfied by the change to her memory. Orange Iroha still paints, but she paints for different reasons and thus chooses different times to paint. If you rewatch episode 6, you'll notice the repetition of "Iro, switch with Iro" as the Orange and Blue Iroha experience different things --they're both the same person through it all, but categorizing each memory with that dichotomy.

The point of the epilogue was to make it clear for those who hadn't yet pieced it together that the change to Iroha had never been a bad one. Cocona mistook it for a bad change because she was afraid of change in general. Any change was a bad change.

>>151838799
On the surface Iroha's purpose was to show off the danger of Deep PI and the personal connections of each Pure Illusion they visited so later the personality change Salt's dad went through wouldn't need an infodump to explain. If you know somebody like Iroha or feel a personal connection to characters like her, then her change and resolution can mean more to you than to others and she doesn't have to explain to Cocona that she's fine now because her regrets about the old lady are gone.

Iroha seemed to grow distant to Cocona, which in turn sparked her whole soul-searching about her relationship with Papika, newfound resolution in episode 8 and was a part of Cocona's world falling apart in episode 10. Much like Cocona in the end Iroha decided to pick up painting again because she just loved doing it and there doesn't need to be a deeper reason for it.

That's not true at all. Selling around 2k average puts you in the top half for sales for at least the last four seasons and in the top 10 in some seasons. So that is a lot better than most anime do. Selling around 1.5k in a most seasons puts you around mid table.

>>
>>151839241
2k is still shy of break-even for the average series. Flip Flapper's likely had an above-average production budget but considering how much marketing budget they saved by just not fucking marketing it, god knows whether it's north or south of the manabi line.
>>
>>151839336
I'm not saying its a good amount, just pointing out that saying Flip Flappers sales are below average or even particularly low for an anime series is wildly incorrect. A lot of people on /a/ seem to think that shows sell 5k+ or whatever on a regular basis when there are usually only a handful of shows in a season that make it over that in the time they are selling enough weekly to make it into Oricon listings.
>>
>>151839318
All of the scenes of Blue Iro drawing had her in a little pigsty surrounded by old drawings.

Clinging to her finished work was one of the aspects of Blue Iro. It's probably related to the fact that Blue Iro is the one who associates those finished work with her parents calling them weird and telling her to draw normally. She craves validation, so she holds onto old works in the hopes of finding somebody to show them to and have them approve.
>>
>>151839318
They probably felt too melancholic and dark for her now to use as inspiration. She couldn't connect to the feelings they expressed anymore and was looking for new inspiration.

Thanks a bunch for giving me more to chew on anon(s). I had interpreted that episode's conclusion as if Papika and Cocona had erased that final scene with Auntie's illuminated face as she does remember from Iro's mind and that had caused her to lose all desire to paint since she no longer held fond memories of Auntie.
>>
>>151839528
That takeaway is intentional on the part of the director as that is what Cocona thought they had done, which sets up her inner conflict in the following episodes.

A bust for what? If you take it to mean that they were looking for someone compatible with Papika, then it means that Cocona was simply a girl she found that happened to line up on her wavelength who she could explore PI with. Given how the story plays out, we know that Cocona is actually the focus of the plot, and not just "the girl who happened to be compatible with Papika." Calling that first girl just another bust doesn't make any sense when we know that Cocona was chosen from the start. It doesn't make sense that they'd go through a bunch of random girls and then decide "Oh hey, let's go grab my long lost daughter and your best friend's kid now."

I think people were hoping for more explanation and to see how it effected the people at Flip Flap if at all. It's not made clear if she is dead or alive and if Flip Flap are complicit with the murder of children or they see it as an unfortunate accident and are deeply saddened. It has a lot to say about the morality of Salt really. Is he willing to do anything and cause the death of children without seemingly batting an eyelid? That said it is fairly easy to accept it for what it is now that is all we will get. Unless anything gets mentioned at the talk event on the 13th Oshiyama is giving but then we will have to be relying on 2ch and twitter reports.

Salt is Gendou. All he wants is his dead wife back. He doesn't give a fuck what it takes to do it.
>>
>>151839708
I take it to mean that Salt was having Papika work with girls that were intentionally similar to his daughter and didn't want her to go out and find a partner on her own because he didn't want Cocona directly involved.
>>
>>151839832
How do we know Cocona was chosen from the start? Salt could have been looking for a way to get Mimi out of PI without having to involve Cocona. Then when Papika found her by chance he just went with it.
>>
>>151839919
There's no way she's dead. Sayuri was worried about Yayaka, an enemy, so why would anyone think she would work for an organization that kills it's own recruits?
>>
>>151839978
Salt is the opposite of Gendou. He wants his daughter to live a happy life and will do anything for that to happen. He does not go to PI to save his waifu, he goes to PI to stop her.

Salt is the anti-gendou

>We had a whole series of girls we were using to save my wife and child, but then one day we just happened to find my daughter who also happened to be under observation from the KKK my dad runs and said fuck it and used her
That's too sloppy for an otherwise well crafted show.
>>
>>151840003
Bear in mind that he probably didn't even know who Papika had found as a partner until she brought her back to Flip Flap. As far as he knew, she had, by some miracle, found another girl who could suevive the entry into PI and had low enough impedance to enter with Papika.

When he discovers it's none other than his very own daughter, he gets a big stupid grin across his face.
>>
>>151840032
Seems bullshit to me. Gathering up the amorphous just made Mimi stronger. It seemed like Salt's true end goal was for Mimi to be brought back. If he just wanted Cocona to be happy then he did a really fucking terrible job at even attempting to make her happy.
>>

There are lots of ways that could be explained. We don't know how much they know in terms of what is and what is not possible and as far as we know they have never found anyone besides Papika who can naturally enter Pure Illusion. Perhaps they needed to specifically start soon on the collection or perhaps Salt decided that it was hopeless and since Cocona was already involved now they should proceed.

Still the strangest scene in retrospect for me. This is not how a father is supposed to react when he sees his long lost daughter.

>There are lots of ways that could be explained.
It was presented in an ominous, foreshadowing type scene and then was just kind of ignored. "We can write it off as a bunch of things" isn't good when the whole story revolves around symbolism and foreshadowing that's used to build up the final conflict and resolution because it's not in line with the rest of how the story is presented.

He was gathering them to prevent the KKK from getting them all

Salt and Mimi were unbalanced, Mimi was over maternal and over protective, Salt was over paternal and let her be free to the extreme. In the end this was resolved

It's purpose in that respect is obvious regardless of the details of the backstory. She indicates that PI is dangerous and trying to enter alone can possibly cause death and that not everybody can do it.

It works perfectly fine in the "grand scheme of things" people are later shown to be unable to enter PI and possibly die if failed in the flashbacks. There might have been more to it at conception but really it isn't incompatible with anything unless you make a certain set of assumptions and decide those are the correct ones.

You have to make a bunch of assumptions yourself to think it was a "dropped plot point" you realise. I'm not handwaving anything either. It's called speculating, thats what people do in the absence of explanation in the show.
>Everything else hinted at had a clearly defined place in the story
It indicated the dangers of PI and the fact that not just anyone could enter. Something that was called back to in the flashback episodes. I already pointed this out to you.
>That post has literally no bearing on anything I've said. Did you hit your head?
The point was that to demonstrate critcism being made by myself as a result of your baseless accusation.

I didn't claim it was. There are plenty of things unexplained in the show, I don't think those are all dropped plot points either. I don't know, myself but I think that was the consensus when we were discussing which release to use for the rewatch stream.

I guess the end result is HS1080 does look better for my personal setup (most noticeable in the curly braces near the top of the red tower). It's not the exact same frame but close enough I think. Like I said, I'm bad at this. I'll just wait for the BDs though I think.

Just finished it. Loved the ending, so i guess the main world has been a pure illusion all along? Given that for a quick moment it looked like our world. Or is it a metaphor that without papika coconas world is a dull and ordinary place.
>>
Sad people on sakuga twitter will treat Oshiyama as that guy who should stick to a drawing/animation-oriented role now.
>>
>>151844348
Nah the way i interpret it is that the dull world near the end is a pure illusion and the point of it was to say that interpreting our world as dull is just as much an illusion as those other worlds they visited earlier on. The message being there is colour, fun and adventure in the real world to be had if you are willing to find it and look for it.
>>
>>151844348
>Or is it a metaphor that without papika coconas world is a dull and ordinary place.
Both, really.
A metaphor is a comparison. You can't make a comparison without two or more things so the world had to be literal within the narrative to be a metaphor for anything.

The bland world near the end of the episode was Salt's PI, hence why Bu-chan was a backhoe and Uexkull was some normal brown rabbit. They returned to their real world after Cocona and Papika reunited; the final scene of them soaring through the sky is back to the place they started.
>>
>>151844407
I don't really see that sentiment being expressed among those people myself. Some of the more prominent guys have expressed positive overall impressions with reservations and saying the production issues were unfortunate.
>>
>>151844407
It's understandable that they'd feel that way.

Oshiyama is an exceptional animator. If you expected Flip Flappers to look like it had been animated by him, you'd be disappointed. As a director, he did an excellent job in his debut series, but it should be obvious that sakugafags care far more about sakuga than directing. In their eyes, Flip Flappers was a failure because the director didn't manage to make everything look as good or better than if every cut had been animated as well as his own work so he's better off animating instead. That's just what they prioritize, though like any western blogging subculture, they seem to be content to deliberately obsess over one facet of a holistic continuum until they become parodies of themselves. I can't help but feel like a lot of their opinions are carefully constructed caricatures and not really reflective of their actual thinking.
>>
What's the generally accepted analysis of this show? I feel like I'm missing something to fully understand this show.
>>
>>151844714
How do you mean analysis? The show is about Cocona's character development from someone who is afraid of making decisions because she might make the wrong one to someone who can do shit.

Also she gets a girlfriend in the process.
>>
>>151844714
Option 1: "It's shit."

Option 2: "It hasn't been written yet because it ended recently and there is a lot of material to go through, plus the creators intentionally left a lot of things open to interpretation as stated in the interview with the director."
>>
>>151843184
That put a stupid grin on my face
>>
>>151844595
I think the idea that the sakugafags only care about animation or place too much value on it is a strawman to be honest. Based on a misconception due to that being the focus of most of their writing. They generally just place more weight on it than your average anime watcher who couldn't care less as long as there isn't obvious quality issues.

The director himself confirmed that the primary guiding concepts were Jung's "Collective Unconscious" and Uexkull's concept of "Umwelt"

The latter you can read a quick wiki article to understand. The former probably requires a bit more reading since almost every piece of imagery in the show is engaging with it, and sometimes in less than obvious ways.

Also the whole 2-Mimi and "Iro, switch with Iro" is playing with "the shadow," another Jungian archetype.

Most of the strange imagery or stark framing choices are ways of using Jungian symbols to suggest things about the characters. Almost all of the symbolism pertains directly to Cocona or Papika or is foreshadowing Mimi so if you feel like you have a solid handle on their characters then all that visual stuff is really just fluff
>>
>>151844913
Pure illusion was explained by the director in an interview you can find in the archive. Someone might link you to it or you can search Oshiyama pure illusion in the archive and probably find a translation.

Okay, just finished episode 9.

So this is as good as the show will get? I really don't see what the fuss is about. All Papika and Cocona do is lose. They've lost every single fucking fight they've been in so far. They don't seem to really give a shit about collecting those beads, and after all this time they only have like 2 of them. The other guys have a whole shit ton and have been collecting them for ages longer. So are we supposed to even care about the beads anymore? I mean it honestly seems like they don't matter, but they're still a central plot point for whatever reason so which is it? Do the bead things matter or not?

If they do, the girls don't seem to give a fuck. They don't train or even seem all that upset about getting their asses kicked every fucking time they go to PI. I mean, a smart person would say "hey, can we take a gun next time?" Or "Hey, why don't we train in fighting to start actually being able to defend ourselves!" But no, Cocona and Pipika seem to like getting beat to shit.

Honestly Yayaka is the only reason Cocona and Papika are still around, and she seems like a much more interesting character than these two. All I can enjoy the show for right now are the visuals, which are cool. I can't bring myself to care about the bead plot, because Cocona and Papika keep losing all the time and the beads don't seem to matter at all.

If you've unironically enjoyed all post Ep7 developments you should be fine.

Oshiyama was inspired by Jungian psychotherapist Hayao Kawai. Kawai wrote quite some books on Jungian interpretation of fairy tales. I read the one on Hansel and Gretel and its interpretation is surprisingly relevant to the main message of the show which I posted above. You can probably find more Jungian interpretation of fairy tales written by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie-Louise_von_Franz

>They decided to abandon telling a coherent story

Indeed. This needs to be repeated every thread as well until it's believed and accepted without question as fact. They even had Papika munch on some placenta. Like what?

>Didn't read the filename.

Unforgivable. Papika was promised to the umbilical cord, how dare she run off and gallivant with some cheap afterbirth like a cheap cambodian prostitute. The bitch doesn't care what's in her kibble so long as some blue haired slut punches her meal ticket

But this is awful. I mean, some parts were good but in general it's just been two girls losing fights and having a rocky time with each other. I don't really feel good, I just feel uneasy. I don't know if Papika and Cocona will really work out long term as friends, as they seem to get in fights with each other (at least Cocona gets mad at Papika for legitimate reasons, Papika is just such a flat character) a lot. I just don't know about all of this. I wanted to like the show, and it't not a bad show nor did I hate it, but it all just feels so hopeless.

At least the fact that they don't really have any beads doesn't seem to be a huge deal. If it was going to destroy the world if they didn't get all the beads it'd feel more stressful. Still, the underlying problem of them getting the shit beat out of them every episode makes it hard for me to find it comfy, even when some of the worlds they go to look comfy as fugg.

Hey, if you want to torture yourself with the post-9 episodes then that's nobody's problem but yours.
>>
>>151846310
No seriously, anon. Watch the next episode.
It will make everything better. Mimi will make everything better
>>
>>151846310
If I were to become an armchair psychologist for a moment, I would say you care too much about results as a person.
You really need to relax a little, anon. What matters most is the journey, not the destination.
>>
I just finished this as well and have been missing the threads. How did Papika get reborn into a baby to match Cocona's age? Was the scene where she's stuck in the tree for days/years showing that? Did Mimi do that? And why? What is Papika?
>>
>>151846470
I think he just wants to see the main characters doing good so he won't have to worry about them.
Not many shows every really make you worry about the future of the characters or feel that kind of uncertainty. I can see how the ominous foreshadowing during the episodic bits might make someone worry that the fun and games will end and something bad might happen to the heroes.
>>
>>151846488
Don't try to make sense of the shitty, rushed writing, anon.
>>
>>151846488
We weren't really sure, ourselves.
According to an interview with the director following the final episode, Papika got trapped in a layer of PI where time was unstable following Mimi's breakdown, and her age fluctuated until it was essentially reset to that of a baby. She lived much of her second childhood trapped in that tree with no memories until Cocona came along.
>>
>>151846656
Essentially Oshiyama didn't intend for a dramatic backstory of Papika instead his Papika is a simple, pure, and cheerful child. A shame of lost character growth drama imo but I guess it's just my undue expectation.
>>
>>151846656
>>151846752
Oh thanks.
>>
>>151846752
My pet theory is that when Mimi said "let's go back" in the end, she was referring to that moment and used her PI power to turn her past self into shards to stop her own rampage and ensure that Cocona would have a chance to grow up independent. Papika was accidentally drawn into the time-fuckery and hence her aging went loopy. She didn't try to change anything else because she knew the end result would be her daughter winning her happiness and independence and because she was finally ready to take responsibility for her own mistakes.
>>
>>151846911
My pet theory is that you guys are making a lot of excuses to what basically amounts to terrible planning. You truly are the Flip Flappers target audience.
>>
>>151846470
I guess that's a fair assessment. I will finish the series, I just feel frustrated because I don't like seeing them lose so much. I wanted them to turn it around at some point and win but it seems like that might not be the point at all.
>>
good show but the last couples confused the fuck out your audience, was there a reason it was a closterfuck?
>>
>>151847003
>but it seems like that might not be the point at all.
It really isn't
I felt the same frustration that you do, especially because Cocona barely seems to do anything in fights despite seemingly being the stronger of the two. It bothered me through much of the series.

But there's more important stuff going on here. Don't let the action distract you from everything else.
>>
>>151846310
>I don't really feel good, I just feel uneasy.
Now imagine if you had to wait a week for each episode. Every time it looks like there's progress, Papika shouts Mimi again, and your faced with another week long wait.

How is it terrible planning for a writer to have a different idea of a character than you?
