Idealism vs Utilitarianism, the importance of hope in the face of adversity,
wishes as an inherently selfish act, cultural expectations of good and evil, the contradictory nature of child heroes, redemption, and a whole bunch mythic revisionism and allegory to top it all off.

You could have stopped at idealism vs utilitarianism. The story is about whether it's better to aim for a realistic goal you can actually achieve or idealistic goals you probably cant ever achieve. It's a pretty stupid theme since obviously deciding to become a super hero is retarded and childish. It's not something you need to think about or debate.

This visual novel, much like many other Japanese works, borrows many themes from Nietzsche's work; thus, the main theme is the importance of having dreams.

However, it would not be honest to just tell you that one thing as other people would also tell you another "one thing". And because I've already cleared your condition, I think it's only fair that I am able to continue.

Truthfully, I didn't know that the themes were borrowed from Nietzsche when I was first reading it. To put it another way, this visual novel was an impetus: the way I thought and actions I partook in may have never happened without it. Sure, most of the writing may be vapid, and the story may be lacking in some's opinions, but the philosophy behind the story was a true stroke of genius, a mind changer.

It may not even be in your best interest to read this visual novel if themes are truly what you're after. If I was writing this to myself in the past, the past me still would've enjoyed it more than reading Nietzsche by itself because I had friends to talk about it to. But if you don't, if you're just reading this story to enjoy it by yourself, I must recommend "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" instead. Fuck Japan and their stupid retard shit.

>Not even allowed to choose the lives of the many over Sakura except in one scene far before it's revealed that she's a threat of the tier that she is

I think part of why people take such a beef with Heaven's Feel is that in a medium all about choice it puts you in this on-rails story where either you go edgelord way too early or you HAVE to prioritize Sakura over everyone else. The only alternative is getting offed by Rider.

The grail would still be there under the mountain after killing Sakura. They'd have to go destroy it anyways to prevent deaths, so there's no point in killing Sakura. Why should she have to die for the sake of a bunch of strangers?

Not that guy, but Shirou never ignores or is indifferent to Sakura's life, even in the bad end where he decides to kill her before getting killed by Rider. He loves her all the way up until the end. But the Shadow was taking people every night, and every one of those people also had family and lovers and hopes and dreams. Killing Sakura would be a genuinely hard decision, and it just so happens to work out that anyone dies that particular night, but anyone who could actually completely disregard all those lives like that would be indifferent to a psychologically abnormal degree.

That's definitely not true. This is the first time in the VN where he's forced to sacrifice someone other than himself in order to keep his ideal. Ultimately, Shirou just can't do it because the reason why he's willing to sacrifice himself so many times is because of survivor's guilt and he finally recognizes that his ideal is incompatible with reality.
