Since there's a new YGO movie releasing next month here in the west, I thought it would be cool to dump the original manga which the movie is based off of. For those of you who only ever watched the anime, I highly recommend reading the manga as it's much darker and better written than the anime was imo. There's also none of the fillers you have to deal with. Since the movie is releasing on Jan 27, 2017, I will dump one volume a day leading up to its release.
Today we start Volume 16 as well as the beginning of the fifth major arc in YGO, Dungeon Dice Monsters or DDM!
>none of the fillers you have to deal with
The random episode fillers weren't great but I think Waking the Dragon and that one tournament arc were pretty good and paced better than the manga jumping straight from Battle City to Pharaoh's Memories. Maybe it's because of nostalgia or maybe it's because I don't like Pharaoh's Memories.
I thought they were fine too when I first saw them but when I rewatched DM years later they sucked. They didn't really add much to the story and felt like a waste of time among other problems.
I remember this game from Mario Party.
She's filler, yeah. I don't think there's anything about the Hawkins that suggests that their existence would contradict anything in the manga, but they aren't confirmed to exist in the canon.
To be fair, she's hardly in the series to begin with. They likely saved themselves the expense of casting someone for the role by cutting her out of it. It also helps leaves the impression that Yugi's grandpa is his caretaker, which cuts down on awkward questions about Yugi's parenting, and Yugi lying to his parents.
I mean the rules are pretty simple regardless
roll dice you picked, store the symbols and use those symbols to move, summon and activate special abilities
It's a shame this is the only instance of this game ever being played and all this gets completely forgotten
It avoids the cost of casting and paying another voice actor for a minor role, or paying a voice actor they're already using for the additional role.
It also reduces the number of people asking things like "Why the fuck did Yugi's mother let him go to Duel Kingdom without an adult accompanying him?" or "What the hell did Yugi tell his mom that she didn't freak out at him taking a cruise ship to an unknown island for a tournament, spending two nights there, the first of which with no food or shelter provided by his "hosts", drove two guys insane, almost risked a third guy committing suicide to win a game, wagered his soul in a card game with a billionaire, then rode back in a basically stolen helicopter flown by another teenager."
But how did Yugi's grandpa start a shadow game. Unless there's a thing where if a millennium item is wagered in a game, that game automatically becomes a shadow game or something
they seem to be using some sort of weird game board, maybe it's linked to the millennium stuff and has similar curses
I doubt this was delved any deeper in a proper translation
But if they're rolling the dice they chose, Yugi is stuck with a bunch of dice with one or two summoning crests, and you need two of those in a turn to summon, right?
At worst, he has three dice with 1/6 chance to hit the summon. That's about 7,5% chance of getting two crests.
Yet he's rolling these things with zero issue after he gets the first roll out.
That's purely manga logic
"haha this is suppose to be really unlikely but actually if yugi did that at the start this would be unwinnable so we have to throw some luck his way"
>Accusing someone of shoplifting before he left the store, hell, before the made it the counter, then searching him without a legal guardian
Man, they'd get sued so hard in real life.
Yeah, but it wasn't that good an adaptation and had its share of filler episodes too.
And that ends Volume 16! Tomorrow we will finish DDM in Volume 17!
I always thought this volume was another attempt of Kaz to come up with further games and try to leave behind the cards
(un)fortunately, that couldn't happen
I bet his editor was swimming in money and bitchslapped him to do BC as fast as possible
Waking the Dragon had the problem of being typical Yoshida-written garbage, all his stuffs (GX S4, 5Ds post 64, ZEXAL) are pretty much the same shit with different characters and he reuse the same message.
Tournament arc was a light breather, plus it had Kaiba OTK a guy from a massive disadvantage.
I'm surprised no-one has done a re-scan or a rip of the original YuGiOh series yet, considering it got a re-release recently, as well as a digital edition. Some redditor already did it for GX/5Ds/ZEXAL
From the paper quality, this seems like a scanlation of the Vietnamese release from the early 2000s. It was unlicensed, the paper was literally worse than toilet paper, and the nips got wind of it and shut it down after Dungeon Dice Monster.
I want to like that duel but everything felt so clearly focused on giving him that OTK
like they clearly wanted an infinite loop OTK and built a duel around getting that, and most of that was using the opponents new and OP cards
>plus it had Kaiba OTK a guy from a massive disadvantage.
That duel was amazing.
Tranny got BTFO.
>Does Yugi finally pork Anzu in the new movie?
The furthest they got was walking together and sitting next to each other.
>Are they finally a couple or did she friendzone him for good after Atem left?
They're stuck in a very deep part of the friendzone.
She's gone to America to become a dancer and Yugi went to Germany or something to be a game designer.
Dungeon Dice Monsters was not a good game to play competitively compared to a card game. I mean you can keep rolling duds over and over but at least in Duel Monsters you'll eventually hit a card you're looking for. Also I imagine the meta would be stale as fuck.
That kid exists. The one who doesn't tell you all the rules until it comes up. And usually they'd conveniently forget them until it came up in their favor.
That kid exists today at my local game store and he's shaped like a giant pear.
As a proof, here's the pic related.
You can see the SFX both in katakana and in Latin script. Nothing like that in these horseshit scans.
I always felts that Waking the Dragons was out of place. It didn't have any actual purpose, and it was so freaking long. I also didn't actually watch it until recently; I read it a long time ago.
I like this manga version better than anime. There is no Yami hogging the spotlight, Jou doesn't lose to Otogi through Duel Monsters which he should be better than him at, he doesn't wear that dumb dog costume, Yugi demonstrates his growth, Otogi has more depth to him than his anime counterpart who's just throwing a tantrum for no reason.
Agree. Yugi is so good looking this days.
The best addition the anime has ever made to Yugioh is adding Kaiba's Blue Eyes jet.
Kaiba accepts Yugi as a rival now? I thought he only cared about Atem. In the manga he wasn't there for the Ceremonial Duel. Only Devlin, Joey, and Bakura gave Yugi credit as an amazing duelist.
