This isnt a "Light did nothing wrong" or "Who was right" thread.
Mainly I just want to point out Light's resolve. Just how dedicated he was to his goal and mission.
He believed what he was doing was his right to do and he never ever faltered on that belief.
What made him so driven? Was it ever explained?
He was just drunk with power. If he stopped, then he would have had to live a normal life, or had Ryuk end his life early. There was no going back,

>What made him so driven?
Egotism, probably. It takes him one day with the Death Note to decide that he's going to make himself a god.

he was a intense guy and found people boring, he only interacted with people in order to benefit himself in some way. I think changing the world excited him as it was discussed in the opening episode that life bored him; the deathnote offered a escape and a exciting chance to match wits with the best detective in the world.

He was not only exceptionally smart, attractive and manipulative, but also really, really bored.
Boredom is what brings both Ryuk and Light into action, and once he understands he has the chance to rise to become a God and take the best out of his many talents, he never faltered on his way.
He was also a textbook psychopatch, narcissist and machiavellian, all of which mean you're basically a heartless power-hungry monster.

He was crazy, as are most truly driven people.

Ever heard of "the white man's burden"?
That, he considered himself enormously superior to everyone else and wanted to use his superiority to make a better world for everyone

I think he also realized that Ryuk planned to end his life whenever he found him boring so he had to find a way to provide the Shinigami with entertainment if he planned to live. Living with the sword of Damocles over your head will make you driven.
He was a victim too.
That's why after killing L he remains contemplative until Ryuk mentions how he no longer has something to look forwards to.
Besides that he was also extremely bored with life and found joy in being able to match those that were as smart as him.
Ego.

So did Light become a shinigami or what?

This is pretty much the last scene and no more are coming. It's him if you want him to be.
That's just how he is. Light is always driven to excel at everything he does. The series also states he does have a strong sense of justice, and he's intelligent and knows it.
None of this is inherently, because he see what he's like without the death note and he's a good person. But having that power and a will to murder turned him into a monster.
