Adlet is the seventh and has been mind controlled into loving Fremy. Once they defeat the person who was mindcontrolling Adlet (this dude), the mind control is broken and Adlet learns that Fremy is the one who killed his sister. Adlet now hates Fremy with a passion and wants her dead.

Well it's hard to explain because you would need to know about Tigerneu, the croc-crow-3-winged kyouma. The one that you see coming to the Adlet village and making them join the Majin in the demon land.
Long story short he is super keikaku man and his true power is manipulating love. He revealed that he implanted "you must love Fremy" into him when he was young, destroyed his village so he would turn "muh vengeance" and train, gave him fake hero seal made from the living corpse of the flower goddess. His love for Fremy was because it will make him the strongest man in the world while also protecting her from the threat (Tigerneu had implanted hero-killer black barren flower into her, basically anti-hero seal that drains more life from the chosen ones the closer they get to the majin, so they would die before reaching him). During final showdown Tigerneu warns Adlet that he will loose his love for Fremy if he kills him. He says "nah, my love is true even if it was caused by black magics. Now die faggot", kills Tigerneu.... and whole love is lost. He mutters Fremy name but he feels nothing. But wait, there is more! He now remembers that it was fucking Fremy who killed his sister and wants to murder her on the spot, but he decides she will have to wait till they defeat the majin. Adlet returns to the muh revengeance fueled by even more hate and Fremy breaks beyond broken after the only person who loved her (bar kyouma mother and dog) betrays her and wants her dead.

I read until 1/3 of Vol5 and the answer is NO and NO.
They barely even talk, just 3 small scenes where they talk and in one of them Fremy is cursing Adlet because he is being deceived and putting everyone in danger.
The third one is on the end of Vol4, Adlet hug her because he knows they'll have to kill her and he is to weak to prevent that.

As to why there are more heroes than it should
Nashetanya has a crest from previous chosen one - the saint of time. Said saint was so curious about the majin and the Goddess that after defeating majin she returned to the Daemon land and joined hands with 3 most powerful Kyoumas (and the only ones who had human-tier form of self awareness) to search the land and use special time skills to see the past of Goddess/Majin. She also time-stopped her crest and at the end of her life she transferred it to one of the kyouma, who would later recruit Nashetanya and bestow her the crest.
Another crest was made from the corpse of the Saint of the Single Flower/Goddess. That crest was given unto Adlet so he could become THE STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD and protect Fremy as >>151786922 explained.
Fremy crest was genuine IIRC but she was implanted with something called black barren flower - spell that would unknowingly siphon life force and power from the chosen ones, but it was destroyed with Tigerneu death
