Rem made Subaru face his own flaws and accept them before trying to correct them. She is his support and has been there loyal to him.

Its a bad end in the sense that they're hurting and frozen in time. Rem is always feeling guilty, so much that she doesn't feel she deserves any happiness and can't bear celebrating her birthday.

Subaru considers himself a loser because he failed on his mission and decided to leave. I bet he also worries on the fact he may die and go back to who knows what reset point and have to see his family never come to be again.

Nonetheless he resolved to not regret and tries to compensate by making every day as happy. It has a sad tone when you think Rem and Subaru may be faking all the happiness so that they don't have to bear the guilt or regret it.

But its also bittersweet and joyful in that they managed to survive and forge a path for themselves and their family. Just like life, it wasn't all sweet but it wasn't all despair either.

I think its one of the reasons he wasn't as close to her but he also watched her die several times to save him and learned more about her as a person.

He also understood he is shady as fuck to everyone that hasn't met him, especially to Rem that holds a bias against people with the witch's scent (which are also mad cultists).

I mean its not like he fell in love with her from one scene to another. It took a lot of buildup and interaction between the two to happen. I think their mutual fight against the cult and the Whale are what strengthened their bonds, and Rem's confession in particular made him consider her as more than just a very close ally.

I think it may also help that after he was left in Crusch's care Rem was the only one that stayed by his side and to which he could confide in his info about the cult so he started to rely more and more in her.
