2017 is here, and what better way to celebrate the new year than looking back on the old one?

With a survey of 333 /a/nons it's time to announce /a/'s Official™ and Objective™ AOTY 2016.

Categories include best anime, worst anime, most surprising anime, most disappointing anime, best OP, best ED, best OST, best scene, best girl, best boy, best seiyuu, shows watched, and shows dropped.

The announcements will start below and the complete data sheet will be posted at the end so you can verify I'm not just making this shit up.

And remember, none of this matters anyway because your taste is superior and you've always known /a/ had shit taste.

Honorable Mentions:
Hai to Gensou no Grimgar - It was a much more realistic look at the Isekai genre and watching these characters grow into being more competent fighters and learning to work as a team rather than just doing so right from the beginning lead to a better story.
AJIN - Because it was another fresh take into the 3D medium with varying but but mostly positive results.
Koukaku no Pandora - If you don't like nekomimi android battle maids you're a faggot.

KonoSuba wins on the strength of its comedy and strong characters, taking best boy and the top two slots for best girl thanks to Megumin and Aqua. Darkness did not contribute.

Honorable Mentions:
Mayoiga - Trainwreck of the season
kuromukuro - comfy mecha anime with great designs. Couldn't ask for more, except non-cgi mecha.
With Tanaka-kun wa itsumo kedaruge you think if you have seen one show like this in its genre, you have seen them all, but I couldn't help, but admire how hard Tanaka worked not to do anything. Also, Tanaka had a great cast of supporting characters.

With heavy hitters on both sides of the spectrum, victories were won by slim margins, with the exception of Luluco, which no other short even came close to.
Yuusuke manages to be the first and only male seiyuu to win an award.
Mayoiga, despite being by far the worst anime of the season, still managed to get more honorable mentions than any other show in any season. You guys sure love your trainwrecks.

Most dropped show - BERSERK, which lost 48 viewers, constituting 17.27% of voters

Honorable Mentions:
Qualidea Code - This show was an absolutely complete train wreck with QUALITY out the ass. However it had a nice plot, decent characters, and watching it with /a/ was a blast!
Amanchu - Lovely Show, just not as good a slice of life as Amano's other works
91 Days - was plagued by it's animation, but made up for it in story. It was such a breath of fresh air to see an anime about the mafia, older characters, and subtle storytelling, for once. It's constant twists and turns made for a very compelling story.

Mob winning in almost all categories by a healthy margin thanks to solid animation and a strong male cast.
KonoBi may not have won anything as an anime, but it did manage to produce a top-tier girl or two.
BERSERK proves once again that you should read the fucking manga.

Most watched show - FLIP FLAPPERS, with 167 viewers, constituting 60.51% of voters
Most dropped show - Occultic;Nine, which lost 35 viewers, constituting 12.68% of voters

Honorable Mentions:
Stella no Mahou - Animation and art style was beautiful
Long Riders - It didn't deserve the QUALITY it got from Actas. It's an excellent show.
Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume - Despite the moments of QUALITY, the actual matches are very well animated and provide a lot of excitement similar to Saki.

Flip Flappers dominates on the strength of its animation and magical OPED.
Kumiko and Euphonium didn't quite live up to their performance last year, but are still very much loved.

DOTY - Kiznaiver, with 12 votes

Best Scene - FLIP FLAPPERS, with 8 votes
Yayaka vs Cocona battle

Best Seiyuu - Kurosawa Tomoyo (Oumae Kumiko, Akagi Miria, Liko), with 15 votes

Honorable Mentions:
Flip Flappers - Inventive use of visuals and symbolism to convey emotion and provide character development. Weak last third, though.
Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku - It wasn't in my top 5, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected and the Novels are quite good.
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - Some of the most compelling drama I have ever watched. Real surprise from what I thought would be a sleeper about storytelling
91 Days - While it's animation suffered it was the complete story and great mafia story without seeming like a cheap ripoff.
Thunderbolt Fantasy - Might not be anime, but it's a pretty damn good Taiwanese puppet show

KonoSuba surprises everyone with its unique portrayal of isekai tropes.
Kiznaiver's resulting disappointment apparently didn't fade as quickly as Mayoiga's.
In a reversal of last year, Euphonium won OST for its season, but lost it to Takkyuu's ping pong beats for the yearly award.
Please note that Honorable Mentions are chosen by a combination of number of mentions and appeals that I thought were heartfelt. It does not necessarily mean that the show failed to place in any other category, though preference is shown to them.

FLIP FLAPPERS

Congratulations to the winners.
It was a fun year and I look forward to doing it all over again with you faggots in 2017.

But before you start shitposting about the results, here are some alternative measures that address some of the more common complaints so that you can damage control even harder.

>but what if a dedicated fanbase were the only people who liked a show, that's not representative of /a/
This is why we did the top five with points values. This way shows that made it into a lot of people's top 5 will get recognized more than a show that was only won 1st place votes.

Seasonal:
Winter:
3 - Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, with 198 points
2 - Boku Dake ga Inai Machi, with 210 points
1 - Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!, with 429 points

Spring:
3 - JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Diamond wa Kudakenai, with 108 points
2 - Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu, with 229 points
1 - flying witch, with 243 points

Summer:
3 - Amanchu!, with 113 points
2 - NEW GAME!, with 248 points
1 - Mob Psycho 100, with 292 points

Fall:
3 - KEIJO!!!!!!!!, with 98 points
2 - Hibike! Euphonium 2, with 185 points
1 - FLIP FLAPPERS, with 303 points

Overall:
5 - Hibike! Euphonium 2, with 239 points
4 - Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu, with 283 points
3 - Mob Psycho 100, with 286 points
2 - Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!, with 354 points
1 - FLIP FLAPPERS, with 372 points

While things mostly stay the same, KonoSuba jumps up a couple places and becomes the only show to compete with Flip Flappers in terms of broad appeal.
Mob also jumps into the top 5, narrowly beating out Re:Zero.

>but popular shows will obviously get more votes than hidden gems even if their quality isn't as good
This is what the AOTY - Weighted field is for. It takes the total number of votes a show received (filtered to those who also filled out the Completed field) and divides it by the percentage of people who gave it a shot (completed + dropped). This equalizes the votes as if each show had the same viewership.
That makes it a bit more fair, but it also introduces inaccuracies from the lower sample size (a lot of people didn't bother with the completed fields) and has a tendency to skew extremely low viewership shows to unrealistic numbers.

Seasonal:
Winter - Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, with 56 votes and 32.76% viewership, totalling 168 weighted votes
Spring - flying witch, with 57 votes and 62.54% viewership, totalling 88 weighted votes
Summer - Mob Psycho 100, with 78 votes and 59.71% viewership, totalling 127 weighted votes
Fall - Kaitou Joker 4, with 1 vote and 0.36% viewership, totalling 276 weighted votes

Overall:
5 - Hibike! Euphonium 2, with 22 votes and 53.26% viewership, totalling 30 weighted votes
3 - Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu, with 32 votes and 69.09% viewership, totalling 41 weighted votes
3 - JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Diamond wa Kudakenai, with 16 votes and 32.00% viewership, totalling 41 weighted votes
2 - FLIP FLAPPERS, with 40 votes and 69.21% viewership, totalling 42 weighted votes
1 - Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, with 31 votes and 32.76% viewership, totalling 89 weighted votes

Rakugo absolutely dominates, but that's what happens when you only have half the viewers of the other top 5 picks.
Kaitou Joker 4 also gets a cheeky win thanks to the only person who watched it loving it.

>but the poll is overrun by casuals whose votes shouldn't be counted
To account for this, I made new fields to filter out votes from people who didn't complete a certain number of shows per season. This should give results from only the serious fans without including all of those filthy casuals who definitely don't comprise a large portion of our board.
The main problem with this is sample size. Between the people who didn't fill out the completed field and those who didn't even watch more than 5 shows a season, we're down to 120 voters for the yearly ranking.

>5 shows per season

Seasonal:
Winter - Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!, with 71 votes
Spring - flying witch, with 38 votes
Summer - Mob Psycho 100, with 49 votes
Fall - FLIP FLAPPERS, with 47 votes

Overall:
5 - flying witch, with 8 votes
4 - Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!, with 9 votes
3 - Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu, with 11 votes
2 - FLIP FLAPPERS, with 15 votes
1 - Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, with 21 votes

Rakugo manages to overtake the competition by only losing 10 casuals, while flying witch sneaks into the top 5.

Strawpoll at least lets you only vote once per IP.

Maybe if this were a /jp/ poll. A sample size of 1000 is far more desirable for /a/ considering the size of the userbase.

>>
>>151766799
No big draws like OPM and NNB who wanted to fanbase shitpost, long poll that filters out people who just want to click on their favorite so that they can shitpost about it, probably some disappointment in last year's results, and the threads rarely generated enough discussion to keep them alive long enough for people to see them.

The turnout was a bit disappointing, but the people who did vote took their time and gave some good results. There were a lot of close races where a single vote made all the difference and that's way more fun than one or two shows blowing everything else out of the water.

That's still only about a 10th of the daily unique IPs. Our polls always have a significant non-response bias. It's never good enough.

That said, if someone willingly declines to voice their opinion on AOTY, they don't get a say in AOTY. That's how the system works. Those who decline representation get none.

Is Re.Zero even good? I read some of the manga adaptation dealing with the protagonist's initial experiences with his reincarnation abilities, but it seemed really boring. I understand it's popular with normalfags, but there isn't even any action to carry it and the protagonist seems to be one of the most bland ever in any isekai story. I can't see the appeal at all.

Watching more than 5 anime a season is a symptom of bad taste, low standards, young age and autism. I would probably have seen YoI, Sangatsu, Hibike, FlipFlap, Girlish Number, Keijo and Ping Pong Girls from the fall season as a young lad but now I can only stomach Jojo and Fune wo Amu as the 44 year old man that I am.

>Probably lack of advertisement really
I think that's the core of it. We'd get a new vote every 5-10 minutes the thread was up, but then it would die and they'd stop until a new one was made. I'm not suited to advertising, and bumping a dead thread makes me feel horrible even if not doing it means people will miss out on their chance to participate.

I was hoping more of them would catch on and spawn some discussion so that it wasn't just a worthless advertising thread, but I guess either interest has died down since last year or lurkers are the main participants this year. Maybe I could have done something better on that front, but I don't have a good solution on that front.

Only retards will try to defend this shit as representative, no surprise there are only ~80 posters in the thread.

>It really shouldn't be surprising that the show that generated the most discussion

Hibike2 was alright, but it dragged too much in the middle episodes. I wouldn't have picked it for my AOTY in any case since it wasn't innovative and wasn't quite as good as S1. People legitimate call it "voter suppression" when a national election requires that you provide proof of citizenship to vote.

Idiots find any excuse to justify why their side didn't get more votes, because we tally power by how many different people show up to tick a box. It's relevant both on the macro scale and to little polls like ours.

I don't want to split it into two polls because the data collected from the long ass seasonal stuff is needed to add the damage control filters and those are way more useful for identifying trends than a simple count. It's also not that hard to just skip it if you don't care.

What I can do is make a poll after each season and then just extend it as the seasons go by. So Winter will just have a normal poll, then in spring I'll add a spring page and reopen it. So anyone who already filled out the (now much shorter) winter poll can just skip to spring while keeping their old votes intact and anyone who missed the first one can go back and fill out the whole thing if they want.

Basically the same thing, but broken up into chunks so it's not so overwhelming. It would also have the benefit of using the same link, so as long as you see it once you can jump right to it at the end of the year without having to wait for a thread.

https://www.strawpoll.me/12017454
>>
>>151771265
The core problem is that fixing the core issues means finding better software or services to run the poll on, and those are poorly understood.
Strawpoll is obviously out of the question because it turns the voting into a VPN charade.
The service used this year is a problem because it alienates everybody unwilling to make or use a google account, which is clearly a statistically significant number.

What the OP should take away from this is that he should endeavor to identify a polling option that neither requires an account/sign in nor is vulnerable to brute-force ballot stuffing via IP hopping, cookie clearing, VPN/proxy abuse or by using bots.

I don't know if such a service actually exists, but as long as you require accounts of any kind, you can be certain you'll alienate an overwhelming majority of possible voters.

Why not make a site specifically for the /a/ AOTY voting that requires sign up for voting using an email?

There is literally LITERALLY no way to stop rigging from happening. It's just not possible. Google is shit and no one wants an account so make something that's specific to /a/ and would still require effort to get a vote in.

This, the only way to guarantee not getting rigged is having the number of voters previously established. As /a/non suggest, voters registered somewhere. Registrations closing before a certain date.

Okay, now you just confirmed yourself as a genuine shitposter, thanks it's been fun.
>Because by dividing the year you remove the bias of time, you're not forcing people to choose between an anime that's a year old and an anime that just finished.
That is retarded. No that is fucking nuts. Shame 2016 ended because that would easily pass as the most stupid thing I've read the entire year. You know that it's more biased this way because you are limiting your sample to one season and repeat it four times. Here's an example.
>Okay so individual AOTS for each season are: Winter: A with 12, Spring: B with 8, Summer: C with 15 and Fall: D with 11 votes.
>C gets 15 votes so it's AOTY
That is your logic and if you think it's correct you are moron with no proper knowledge of how statistics work. You cannot compare samples from different groups without first giving them a common point of reference, that is putting them within one timeframe, a year.
>>
>>151772320
>If I am the only person doing thing X and nobody else is doing X who is better than me?
No one, it also means that you are better than no one, if you are the only one doing X but your X is bad quality it does not mean you are the best, you are the only one because there is no quantitative change to compare you with another person.
The quality of your X can't be compared so you can't be the best because you also would be the worst, that would lead to a illogical situation. Please review your logic.

>How so?
You casually agreed without giving any meaningful solution. So yeah, a shitpost. It absolutely had no value as a statement.

>There are no different groups, all the anime aired in the same year, do you really think you know something about statistics?
Yes, because I've studied them and I have experience and knowledge to back my words whereas, as far as I see, you are going by your own logic, probably with some wikipedia tabs open in the background, prepared in case someone calls you out on your shit. But then again this is a stretch in itself and my presumption.

Back to initial point. You have grouped them into seasons which are framed within the year. You lose the timeframe of a year as your point of reference and limit it only to individual season for particular anime. Thus from one uniform sample, you get 4 smaller samples that can be compared within their individual groups but cannot be compared between groups without making a logical error.

In the end you are one of those people mentioned by an anon here. The people who do jack shit and complain the loudest without giving any solution to the problem and who just induldge themselves in their self-masturbatory verbal diarrhoea while maintaining their loop of denial.

First, I need to show you that OP way of doing the poll is wrong, and you're the one samefagging to prove something. Of course i don't have a solid solution now that's why the answer to "lets put some effort in finding" was Ok, you didn't ask for a solution you asked for collaboration. You're pretty retarded.
>>151773097
>I've studied them
And my dad works for nintendo
> You lose the timeframe of a year as your point of reference and limit it only to individual season for particular anime.
And that is a good thing because the bias of time will not affect anime, the anime will be chosen only by its qualities.
>Thus from one uniform sample, you get 4 smaller samples that can be compared within their individual groups but cannot be compared between groups without making a logical error.
If the sample is "uniform" you can compare anime with anime because they are the same, there is no other quality lost than time, but time does not change the quality of anime.

>The people who do jack shit and complain the loudest without giving any solution
There is no reason to give a solution when there is people that does not think there is need for one, first i need to make you understand, but your fantasy studies makes it hard.

No it does not, your AOTY is probably your AOTS in its respective season, the only change is that you get four votes instead of one.
>>
>>151773644
not that guy but.

you are dealing with different data sets. the AOTY set and each individual AOTS set. You can't get the results for AOTY by just adding AOTS together. They are completely different questions.
>>
>>151773851
>AOTY is probably your AOTS in its respective season

No, its not. You can easily consider anime a,b.c.and d each the best of each season but consider anime y best of the year. different question, different sets, even if each season is 1/4 of the year
>>
>>151773863
>You can't get the results for AOTY by just adding AOTS together.
You can add anime with anime because they have the same qualities, seasons are only subsets of a larger timeframe.
The question for the best anime of the year can be answered by taking a look into the best anime of every season.
>>
Seems to correlate with whatever people like here, but

>>
>>151773957
>You can easily consider anime a,b.c.and d each the best of each season but consider anime y best of the year.
And that has 0 logic, you're discriminating anime by when it aired instead of its qualities.

>>
>>151773851

Probably, yes. But that doesn't mean you can extrapolate the AOTY from the AOTS votes, especially anything that isn't #1.

Also in this poll the fall AOTS did win AOTY so I don't even know what you're bitching about.
>>
>>151774023
You are not trying to determine how people rank anime, just what the rank is. If you assume that someone will rank AOTS as AOTY you are making an error. You have to ask the right question to get the right answer.

If you want to know AOTY you have to ask that question, not infer it from 4 different sets that each only represent 1/4 of the total.

>>
>>151774062
I think these idiots are arguing something like the show that won its AOTS the highest is automatically AOTY.

Which is some ultra grade bullshit because it depends more on what else was in the season than how good the show actually is.
>>
Fall AOTS --> anime A 33pts 2nd place: anime B 2pts

Spring AOTS --> anime C 15pts 2nd place: anime D 10 pts

Adding seasons anime A wins AOTY, which is stupid since never considered that anime C could be better than anime A. That's why AOTY needs it's own category.
