Honestly, why even care at this point? If you read the manga from beginning to the latest one, it's completely different now. The grimdark, bleak tone is almost completely gone, the character designs have even completely changed -Guts looks like a male fashion model, and the women all like like something out of a cartoon.

I doubt it. Berserk has spanned close to 30 years now, and the way it has progressed has made perfect sense. Change is good. The world of Berserk has changed, developed and expanded beyond what it once was.

Expectations of it being nothing but a dark fantasy are delusions fueled by the overstimulating eclipse scene. Before that scene, the "grimdark" or "bleak tone" just came and went, it wasn't a constant; there was already silliness found in Puck; and there are still aspects of current Berserk, albeit subtle, that are dark. Falconia's heavenly appearance is a cynical pretense to the entire tragedy. The only means of defeating God Hand and the Neo Band is magic — in layman's terms, the order of the world and the powers that be are overcome only by the deepest deceptions of the spirit. There is a lot at work in Berserk still that people like you downplay, and I tend to think it's because you rushed through it and didn't take the time to follow what was actually happening.

Also, even if you just don't like the change in vibe, it's still INTERESTING. It's a very interesting fantasy. The entirety of Ganishka, Fantasia, and Falconia is fascinating and bizarre. At surface value the sea god may have seemed pointless but there are big implications in that entire encounter that we are bound to learn more about later on. The elf island's existence is interesting and there is still so much up in the air that we're waiting to learn more about or see a conclusion to. Miura is still building a rich world in Berserk even if Puck isn't waving his elf shota ass in your face every other page anymore.

Are you serious? It maintains being relentlessly dark until sometime after the goblin arc.
I'm not downplaying anything. You even admit the non-dark elements were subtle.
If you like that it's a cartoony parody of itself, fine. I don't. I can read a number of other light-hearted titles already, fantasy or otherwise.

Completely caught up with it yesterday. I have to say, I really like it, but I wish that it would make a small return to it's more lonely and solemn nature. I like the cast, so I wouldn't say kill them all off, but at least for just a bit make Guts all alone with just Puck, because I really liked the dynamic they both had. Maybe they could get seperated from the group somehow? Though I don't see that happening. Also, I'm 50/50 on the Berserker Armour. I mean sure, it looks cool, but did we really need an "ultimate rage mode" when Guts is already in that state constantly? Also, it makes the impact of though fights not as big, because you know he'll win no matter what because he has that armour on, and when he's with Schierke.

It gave a potential explanation as to how Skull Knight reached the form he's in now, and it also adds to the sense of power that the Neo Band of the Hawk have. They are more refined and more powerful than the previously grotesque apostle forms, and far too superhuman for even Guts to match with his normal strength.

The armor was like an extension of his rage to me, a better upgrade to his strength then something like some inherent power. Blind rage that makes him invincible but hurts himself and makes it hard for him to distinguish between friend or foe.

It could have used less gore and rape and egde imo. I still think the devil dogs chapters are some of the most boring in the series. But for the most part, the dark tone was well done, consistent, and above and beyond that, and what made it great, was that it had great characters and a great story. It just needed to have ended a long time ago, is all.
