No, I wouldn't say he has any "friends" left, there were a few in WiILL-E that begrudgingly put up with him before, but now I imagine whatever goodwill they might have had for him is shot. A combination of his superior's mishandling of virtually everything and his own bullheaded actions have put him in a pretty bad spot. I dont see how there could possibly anything but a bad end in all of this.

Asuka appears to be mad at Shinji merely because he abandoned her and didn't try to save her in 2.22, instead saving Rei. So there maybe something there that she has no loyalty to WILL-E.

I can't take the movie seriously, I can't take the characters' actions at face value. At every key point in the movie, someone does the worst possible thing that can be done in that situation. And then we drop all pretense of plot and cause and effect, in a movie about cause and effect, and have an hour of Elven John.
