How did this white guy get so good with a sword, /a/?
He decided that superior nippon steel folded a thousand times was better than Western weapons.
He realized that Chinese martial arts > whatever white man's fencing.

>be a drunk Portuguese sailor in gookland trading the queens gold and goods for foreign spices and silk
>hear local tincan mouthbreathing heavily about his glorious katana made for cutting down peasants
>laughingmuskateers.jpg
>classical gook savage
>he heres me and demands i stand and recive his honour like his boyservents in his lords castle
>unzip my rapier and parry dagger made with average quality European steel
>disarm him and poke him in the face with my sword
>talk to my shipmates about it later
>apparently this is a common occurrence as these slant eyes cant understand the concept of a drunk half naked forigner beating the shit of them.
This happened multiple times with the Portuguese in Japan for some reason

Well, considering the size difference between Japanese and foreigners, was it that uncommon for someone with larger mass and long reach to win a fight?
>>151729960
Rapiers are stupid long
>>151729960
to be fair everybody was smaller back then due to dietary restrictions on optimal growth.
Interesting point that in the peak of the east india trading companies trade and thereafter for some time, it was all but illegal to dock with a Japanese vessels, for the alarming number were pirates masquerading as distressed or trading ships.
There is one story of an itallian crew docking and trading with a crew only to be stabbed in the back with poisoned weapons, the crew retreated into the hull and eventually pushed them off the ship with long-pikes.
Is the katana really as overrated as weapons nerds say it is?
I heard they were mostly for decorative purposes. So European swords are much superior?
>>151730990
They're a bastardized version of the chink jian, b/c the nips can't into superior chink forging.
>>151730990
>I heard they were mostly for decorative purposes
What the fuck.
>Is the katana really as overrated as weapons nerds say it is?
I think they start to get underrated because of the backlash against them. The katana was a good weapon, the ejapanese weren't retards when it comes to using weapons, they made good use of what their land gave them. Maybe a bit short, hand protection seems to lack, which for some reason doesn't seem to have bothered them. It fucking hurts if you get cut by one. Not too curved that that you had problems to stab with them.
Only thing they were really retarded about was ships, and maybe sieges.
>>151730990
They were cutting weapon who worked well against unarmored/lightly-armored ennemy. That's all.
Not all european swords are as sharp but then again not all european sword had the same role.
>>151729151
this has been proven wrong as broadswords snap katanas in half.

He was powered by virging weeab autism.
>>151729960
Portuguese are pretty short too
>>151730990
As far as being able to cut through anything and other ridiculous statements like that, yeah its out of proportion. I just find katana-based martial arts very aesthetic so I do a bit of practice in that when I'm bored.
Really, the katana is a two-handed short sword, that isn't very well balanced compared to it's European counterparts.
>>151729863
But gooks aren't Japanese.
>>151730990
Samurai rarely used their katana. They were mostly shooting each other with bows and arrows, muskets, and stabbing each other with spears. Katana are basically last-ditch weapons for when shit has hit the fan.
>>151730990
it make sense when you look at a cultures weapons being allegorical for their history and resources.
Nipland has shit iron which is why it has to be *folded* 10000000x times to make it anywhere near as good as steel let alone Damascus steel, but thats just due to metallurgy they didn't have.
because of that no plate armour, no knights, no horses so no calvery.
What do you have left to fight? mid armoured footsoilders and archers which you need pikes halberds and cutting wepons for, not maces, warpicks or aint calvary polearms or sabers for horseback.
the Katana is a product of its enviorment like every wepon, a fine sidearm for its context and a cultural icon that was dramatized and romanced heavily.
Are there better weapons objectivity? yes without a doubt, but it lives in a specific context which we have to give room for.

>no horses so no calvery
Samurai started as mounted archers.
>>151729036
>only the second best white guy in the movie
Who cares?

katanas are like over sized obsidian knives. extremely sharp but also extremely delicate, brittle and easy to break.
European sword tends to be more durable and flexible due to superior iron.
