My reason for tearing up in anime or movies as a whole is not because its sad. I get emotional based on the build up of good scene development, flow editing and music all coming together to make a perfect shot. And when it comes to anime, you can add good animation to that list.

I feel little emotion when most characters die. But have that character dying with a dramatic cut, sweeping music and amazing animation and I'll go crazy.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
I didn't even think I liked Yang *that* much, but when Julian was carrying his body it all just became too much for me.
Other than that, none that I can remember.

Everyone left to go back to Earth, leaving the main girl to fight by herself for an unknown amount of time. In order to calculate exactly when she would return, they would have to know exactly when she left. Not just by the second, but by a nanosecond. Since being off by even 1 second would be many years in real time. But no one was there to even monitor her actions in local space, let alone record the exact moment she warped.

This means the people who stood out there to make such a 'dramatic' welcome back message should have have been standing there for hundreds of years. Also, if 10,000 years had passed, who's to say that history would even remember her? That's even longer than our current recorded history. And we can't even remember stuff from 1000 years ago.

Most gunbuster fans just chalk it up to 'well they must have sensors that saw her enter the solar system'. But the issue here is, the show never told you that. Having to make an assumption breaks the entire touching moment they were trying to go for.

Nichijou. I was mad depressed when I watched that and it was like, the one bit of happiness in my life. In the penultimate episode I was pretty drunk and having a grand old time as usual. Towards the end when Mio looks so defeated that she lost at love and Yuuko and the gang set up that lottery and give her the ticket of everlasting friendship I fucking broke down. All I could think of was how sweet of an act that was and that cemented Nichijou as one of my favorite anime of all time. I think it's the first time I ever really looked past the surface of a show to find the message it was trying to send.

Sometimes I rewatch the first episode just to make myself cry.

I'm generally a crybaby, but the worst case for me was the last episode of Katanagatari. I had a stream of tears running down my face during almost all of the episode. At several points I caught myself sobbing out loud uncontrollably.

I somewhat agree with your other points though, 12,000 years is a fucking long time. But now with proper technology we should be able to keep intensive records that last forever so our history records over great periods of time would be much better than in our past. Plus they saved literally the entirety of humanity, that's enough of a thing to create god status that could be passed down generation to generation for a very long time.

The fact that you're making assumptions for what they did is proving my point. The OAV didn't explain its biggest, most emotional, most important scene. The scene tons of people say made them cry. Not unlike how the ending to Cowboy Bebop falls apart if you stop to think about how stupid Julia was for standing up in the middle of a gunfight or how dumb Vicious was for throwing Spike's gun back to him.

But this is pointing to the real issue. These scenes were meant to trigger an emotional response. To get people to actively turn off the logical part of their brain and accept an emotion. For most people, they are able to do this. Just like they're able to get an emotional response out of Titanic or Star Wars Episode I. But the few of us who do think back to that scene after the emotion has passed, actually activating our brain and checking it a second time, are left with a sour aftertaste.

As far as I can remember, I bawled while watching both seasons of Clannad, Air, Kanon (2006), Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, and I cried while watching Steins;Gate and Elfen Lied.
I've also teared up to lots of other stuff, like Space Runaway Ideon, Fate/Zero, Mobile Suit Gundam 0079, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
Sometimes I'll tear up a bit even if I'm also laughing at the ridiculous melodrama.

Digital records are extremly vulnerable. Most of the digital things you own will start to degrade before your lifetime ends. Let alone 12,000 years from now.

This is why the only records we really have that have lasted more than 5,000 years were things written on stone or kept as an oral record through generations. And of course the second one requires a group of people not to be wiped out or change their method of keeping records.

Honestly I don't cry over sad scenes that much.
I only cry tears of joy. Tears of joy because the anime was so good, so heartwarming, so emotional that when I realize how much of a masterpiece it was, and that I will never watch it for the first time ever again, I cry. Aria is one. K-On's ending is another. I also cried in Code Geass as a kid, also TTGL, and Spice and Wolf.
