I don't know about Dies Irae specifically, but visual novels often have ridiculous amounts of text to translate. Clannad and Fate/Stay Night are over a million words each when translated into English, which is longer than the King James Bible and about the same as twenty typical light novels. They also often rely on the context of the visuals, which complicates the translation and editing some. So just the translation costs a lot, before taking into account licensing, programming, testing, etc.

I would take clannad VN over clannad anime any time, same with lots of other adaptations. By sacrificing animation, you get a better story with more detail without anuthing left out due to a constraint to 12 measly episodes. The source material is nearly always better than the anime adaptation.
