I'm very surprised by the response it got. The time thing was a neat twist, I would've preferred to see more of when they switched bodies (but I guess that may have been too much filler material), the rules of what makes them forget/remember each other were a little confusing, and it's not clear why everyone survived in the end either, because the first time the meteor destroyed the entire town. Why didn't that happen the second time?

I watched it yesterday.
All this hype, all those 10/10.
It is not even the best Makoto Shinkai, far from it.
It felt really long for nothing.
It was a cool movie, far better than everything I've seen in theaters this month (December that is) but it doesn't deserve the 9.38/10 and the first place in MAL.

The first part was great.
The visuals are fabulous.
Characters are really cool.
But the story is confused and disappointing.

Seriously, I think Shinkai partly overdid it out of spite from being called the second Miyazaki.
To me, it's seems like: "You want me to be the second Miyazaki?, eat this shit!" or something along that line. But it's a quite good movie tho, engaging how people respond to death.

Because he hit all the right notes for a mainstream audience. It's basically like what>>151710543 and >>151714527 It's certainly not a bad movie, but it's a very safe story with standard elements that appeal to a wider audience. Combine that with some nice visuals and music, throw in the 'exotic' factor in that it's japanese animation so it's very different from usual pixar/dreamworks stuff and people with limited exposure to anime will praise it to high heavens.
