Why do so many manga that start out interesting and compelling

The author.

Example: preboat Berserk vs. Berserk now.

why is it so common though?

Its the plan all along. Get readers with premise then stall as long as possible.

The reason is simple. The author runs out of ideas.


Without well thought out goals stretches and arcs being planned out during the process of writing the current arc, the author is just going to stumble, and even then they'll eventually run short on ideas. If you look at what that happens to, it feels like its long running shounens mostly. because other stuff seems to be able to tell its story, and then fuck off without much issue.

It's not even the creators fault most of the time, the publisher sees an established brand, of course they're gonna milk that sucker dry

Publishers and studios have been taken over by "hurr-durr i'm a ceo gimme money" fags who don't understand art or even how normal people think, so they rely on formulas to maximize their profits.

The author plans a central story and theme but it becomes popular so neither the author or editors want to end it. It is then extended beyond the original plan getting more formulaic and editors get more control in the story and shoving currently popular characters in future scenes.

Because sometimes you get an idea, and you got "this'll be wicked awesome", and then you get into it and after a few years you realise you don't care about it any more and never thought up a way to progress it past the initial starting point so you just meander along for awhile, collecting checks as you get set into a routine of writing and drawing, until someone tells you it's time to stop or you're on the verge of suicide, at which point you conjure up some hasty, unsatisfactory ending.

In many cases, specially shounen, the series is extended longer than it was supposed to go, so you end with the beginning (when it's fresh) and maybe some arcs that were a natural progression from the beginning as good, then a lot of "filler".

Most people who have story ideas only have enough material for a few volumes. But if their story becomes popular, the company demands they keep writing more. What you get is a story that has maybe 3-5 volumes worth of story, but is strung out for 20 volumes to fill a quota.
