Mostly used to refer to any female character that is extremely nice to the protagonist while also being pretty much perfect herself. The reasoning is that because main characters tend to be used as self-inserts, giving that self-insert a very easy person to like is "waifu bait." Most recent target of bullying with this term is Rem.

"Waifu bait" is a meaningless pejorative, much like "moeshit" or "autistic".

I always saw waifu-bait as those girls that have a lot of focus in a show and will have memorable moe scenes and seems impossibly perfect or more interesting/likable than the rest of the cast.

I haven't seen REddit Zero but Rem seems like a perfect example of what I think of when I hear waifu-bait.

Waifu bait refers to characters are characters that are cute,nice,submissive and mostly shows great affection to their love interest. This is not inherently bad but these type of characters tend to be one dimensional characters who only exist to fellate the MC. The worst and most popular examples I can think of are the battle shounen heroines like Hinata and Orihime

Waifu-bait means a girl specifically designed to be 'anime cute', which isn't bad on its own but it's usually done in an overtly manipulative way that distracts from actual story, setting and characterisation. The most obvious tells for an absolute waifu-bait character are a complete inoffensiveness in personality and a skewed focus in their presentation and animation. This usually manifests through parts of over-animation like over designed eyes or 'cute' flourishes, eg. tustling hair or randomly having a beam of light shine on them.

They'll be soft-spoken, kind to a fault, likely have some form of 'traditional' aspect (eg. wears a kimono once or does tea ceremony or whatever), good with kids and in some kind of special position like a priestess or whatever (bonus: special position under some kind of OBVIOUSLY unjust prejudice for extra pity points).

They're a boring, fucking nothing character specifically designed to be pined after and to illicit feelings of 'gotta protect muh waif' whose screentime always takes away from more interesting parts of the show like story/world building/actual characters
