Arararagi considered the cat to be his savior. Since he had such low self-esteem and put her on such a high pedastal, the thought of them being an item was never something he mentally accepted. To top if off, he later tells his sister that he realized that the feelings he had for the cat were strictly built from lust, and that the only true love he felt was towards crabs.

On the cat's side, she didn't love him for who he was as a person, she liked him for the mystery around him and his connection to the supernatural. She wanted change in her life, and ararararagi's encounter with the vampires made him interesting and foreign. Since cat suffered shit at home, she was looking for escapism, kinda like the bullshit gothic teenage girls were into back when twilight was a thing.

All Oddities are influenced by those who created them.

Hence she was influenced by Araragi.

However, after she evolved past being Araragi's mirror image, Ougi was able to be freed from Araragi, in a sense. But as an Oddity she can't be free from humanity, so instead she started being affected by Monkey.

Remember how it was said that the Envy Tiger could escape and become a new legend beyond Hanekawa's control? That's what Ougi is now. She is a brand new oddity that started off as part-Araragi, but is now her/his own thing. But a part of her nature remains, in that she start to become the mirror reflecting the inner thoughts of other people she meets.

In a way Ougi is basically Black Hanekawa played backwards.

The Black Hanekawa was a Cat Oddity that haunts people who bury its body. But that oddity was overwhelmed by Hanekawa's own insanity and was forcedly absorbed into her, becoming a part of her and even lost its male gender in the process.
