Post SaNa for a SaNa thread

One Piece is all about the older generation passing the torch to the younger generation, or else just passing on pointlessly while the younger generation step into their place. The strawhat Luffy wears is a constant reminder of that. So is the repeated idea of "Inherited Will". Luffy is basically trying to do what Roger already did. To Decode the poneglyphs is to read a message from your ancestors.

The cast can basically be divided into the old guard and the newer generation. Whitebeard, Rayleigh and Sengoku as opposed to Ace, Zoro and Coby. Frequently the older ones pass things onto the younger ones. Consider Nami and her love of oranges because of Bellemere, Sanji being mentored as a chef by Zeff, Chopper and Hiruruk, Robin and her mother being archaeologists, Franky and Tom, etc.

Jinbe is firmly in the old generation. He's doesn't belong in the SHs. He's a passer-onner, not a receiver. He's Whitebeard, not Blackbeard, Shanks not Luffy, Zeff not Sanji, Bellemere not Nami. Someone will join in his stead, perhaps someone he's already passed something onto in some form or another. Maybe another practicioner of Fishman Karate

Brook's old, true, and he doesn't fit so well (and maybe this links to why he's been the least impressive, least used, least developed SH so far) but he is carrying on the promise of an entire crew to return to Laboon.

It's not really about age per se, more about waves of action and then people looking up to or being inspired by that. The classic opening is how Roger inspired a generation of pirates.

I can see that. The thing is, someone like Koala does that much better because she's the more regular age range for the current generation and she herself is a unification of Fishman and Human in the sense of her fighting style and history.

Just a theory, but she seems like a better fit in a bunch of ways AND is another female (to get the quota to 7:3 rather than 8:2) and links Luffy to Sabo and Dragon better.

The thing is, it's incredibly likely that Jinbe has had a bunch of years removed from his life. It's also probable that Luffy will when he faces BM. So either Jinbe is close to death anyway or he REALLY will be when he has to pass life into Luffy as we saw happen in Pedro's flashback.

There's also no real reason for the pledge to be a SH that he made unless he fails to fulfil it. It works then but otherwise it was just pointless from a dramatic point of view. He could've just joined there and then if Oda wanted him to but he delayed it and had this shit happen before it went anywhere - and by "shit" I mean going against someone known to remove years from peoples' lives and then turning openly on her as well.

Koala is fun but she's not a "better fit" for the crew at all. She's just another nice girl, there's nothing special about her outside of a cute little reference.

Jinbe being different from the rest of the crew is a plus, Brook and Franky and Robin and Chopper were all very different from the rest of the cast when they arrived. And several of them joined in weird ways, at weird times! Him delaying by dealing with Big Mom's responsibilities doesn't mean he's about to die, it just means he's an old man who took a lot of pushing to do something for himself.

Jinbe is basically very serious and would sit there medidating a lot. He'd be another Zoro without even the "I hate Sanji" wrinkle. FIghting-wise he'd be the same as Koala. With the latter it's more about how she connects Luffy to his dad and brother. She's also friends with Robin already. I said this earlier elsewhere but I could also imagine future twists with her actually being a spy for Dragon to keep an eye on Luffy but she comes around (of course) to being truly loyal to Luffy. Future Jinbe events aren't really forthcoming. He'd just sit there silently and then punch things when fighting starts.

Honestly, I wouldn't put money on her becoming a SH either but it seems more fertile ground and also more fitting than Jinbe who has a very "better do the right thing before I die" aura around him right now.

We've already seen that while Jinbe is a mature adult, he's really very silly. He's a doddling grandpa who takes strange things seriously and doesn't think to take very tense situations as serious as he should. He's prideful and stubborn and he's Koala's connections to Sabo and Dragon aren't any more interesting than Robin's, she's an incredibly shallow character (but that's fine because she's very tertiary.)

Brook will get Haki.
Nami will get a Devil Fruit.
Carrot will betray the Straw Hats.
Jinbei will die.

So how are you enjoying this arc in comparison to the last one? Meaning Dressrosa, not Zou.

Personally I had to force myself to read chapters during Dressrosa, and even the later parts that were supposed to be exciting, were a mes to read, only exception being the Cora flashback. I'm having a much better time reading this arc.

Okay, this is gonna take a bit of autistic dissection.

First off, none of us are focusing on what ISN'T explained.

Brook likes Tea and Takoyaki, not milk. And while it's hard to see, you can see a ball of something near the tail of the fish. If he didn't forget Brook, I'd say that's the Takoyaki... BUT I wouldn't be sure, since the spiky pattern has me thinking of some vegetable accompaniment. But it's definitely seafood. Why? Placement.

The Bento is dividing by types of dish, meats in one box, pasta in another, sandwiches (burgers are sandwiches, let's not get picky on that, I know one of you faggots would) and seafood in another. And it's clearly divided, you can see the rims of the box.

So the way I see it, there's room for at least TWO crewmates. Whoever likes the Port. And whoever likes the dark stuff. And I'd say maybe three, since I don't think that stuff is rice. While it would be funny to imagine he didn't make anything for Zoro because it's Zoro and why would Sanji do anything for him, there's what looks like a Narutomaki (circled in green), which is a cured fish product, and the other meat could be sea monster meat, and the left is more iconically Luffy's. So I'd say it's more likely some other dish.

It really triggers my autism that people do not know the difference between dragging and just being long. Dressrosa was the latter. It was long because it had tons of characters and subplots going on. Dragging something out means to fill the gaps between something happening with air/filler. Like Son Goku and Frieza looking at each other and panting for 30 seconds or longer every 5 minutes. Dressrosa did not have that. Every chapter at least covered a bit of a subplot or was more about a certain character. If you cared about this subplot or character is a different story but stuff was happening and the plot advanced. It was NOT dragged.

Koala is the only younger generation I can think of that is a practitioner of fishman karate. She also has history with figher tiger and the sun pirates. She also has a tragic past, on par (or worse) than every single straw hat.

I can't really think of anyone else that would fit your description but her. All of the fishmen introduced were fodder or non-fighters (like keimi or pappug). It still doesn't make sense for her to join, unless the revolutionary army is destroyed, and she reveals a dream to travel the world or something. Plus she looks too much like pre-TS nami.

Personally my biggest issue with Dressrosa is that I had no emotional investment in it. Usually in One Piece I give a fuck about what happens to the characters, but I couldn't bring myself to care about Rebecca, the Tontattas, Sabo, even Law and his tragic backstory left me cold. Glad that mess is over.

Imo It felt 'dragged' because of the flashback, Maybe the arc needed to be long. But flashback didn't need to be 3+ chapters (Kryos / Dressrosa flashback, not Law's) we know oda can make solid short flashbacks like on this arc or the one with Lucy Ann (which was actually added without a real reason, unlike the Baby 5 one).
Or the entire chapters dedicated to people crying, or focused on Mansherry or Rebeca.
I did like Dressrosa, and the arc itself wasn't 'dragged' but it didn't need to be that long.

Another thing that drags Dressrosa down is that everything happens at the same time.

You got the tournament happening at the same time as the factory search and the hostage exchange and it makes resolution seven slower than they already had to be. and then it instantly jumps into the main conflict.

The whole sequence of events should have been spread through at least a couple of days more.

I can see the reasoning, and like I said, I do like Law, it's just that I always felt there should be a distinction between 'allies' like the Samurai or Gan Fall or Vivi and the core crew members. If Law's not gonna pledge allegiance to the straw, then he should take a secondary role.

But, that's just my opinion. Oda's written it another way entirely and I don't think it's necessarily detracted from the experience.
