One Piece is all about the older generation passing the torch to the younger generation, or else just passing on pointlessly while the younger generation step into their place. The strawhat Luffy wears is a constant reminder of that. So is the repeated idea of "Inherited Will". Luffy is basically trying to do what Roger already did. To Decode the poneglyphs is to read a message from your ancestors.

The cast can basically be divided into the old guard and the newer generation. Whitebeard, Rayleigh and Sengoku as opposed to Ace, Zoro and Coby. Frequently the older ones pass things onto the younger ones. Consider Nami and her love of oranges because of Bellemere, Sanji being mentored as a chef by Zeff, Chopper and Hiruruk, Robin and her mother being archaeologists, Franky and Tom, etc.

Jinbe is firmly in the old generation. He's doesn't belong in the SHs. He's a passer-onner, not a receiver. He's Whitebeard, not Blackbeard, Shanks not Luffy, Zeff not Sanji, Bellemere not Nami. Someone will join in his stead, perhaps someone he's already passed something onto in some form or another. Maybe another practicioner of Fishman Karate

Not really much of a challenge, but Coby has been improving for 2 years under Grandpa Garp. He also unlocked his CoO Haki during the war so a rematch could be interesting.

When Luffy and Coby met after Ennies Lobby, it was pretty hype when he just went all "SHAVE" on Luffy. He seems to be a prodigy that is pretty quick at learning.

It's not so much about age as it is about place in the generational tree in terms of passing things on. Roger was relatively young when he died but he's inspired hundreds of people, passed on the hat to Shanks who passed it onto Luffy.

Brook carries the wishes of his crew with him, he's become the sole survivor that has to meet Laboon again. He's not really passing anything on nor do his actions represent "the time before". He's only really starting to live his life now (Soul KIng and all that). I do agree he's the worst fit for that idea, though.

So how do you guys feel about Jinbe losing his leg?

Multiple people can carry the will or receive motivation and ideas from the same person, like with Roger. Or more similarly to Tom, Franky and Iceburg, you have Bellemere and her two daughters.

And yeah, you get crossovers between gens in someways. It's more of an artistic thing than a maths equation. For example, Buggy is of this generation very much but he obviously served with Roger and on a level with Shanks at the time, the latter being a previous gen guy. Franky obviously inherited the shipwright thing from Tom. Tom made Roger's ship, Franky has made Luffy's. When Luffy becomes Pirate King, Franky will be in the same boat (kek) as Tom.

On a slightly different note, I guess you could think about it as where on their character arc are they? Brook might be old as shit but he's only just starting as a person. Same as Buggy, he was with Roger but was a failure for the most part so his personal journey started with Luffy's, really. Coby could've been 78 when he met Luffy and it wouldn't matter, it's his journey that's moving alongside Luffy's that matters.

All just stuff to bear in mind. You don't have to agree 100% but just think of it now and again as you read through.

I honestly don't know what to think about One Piece anymore.

I did not realise that I would get this worked up about it and I think that’s because when you’re watching the series, there are little moments of sexism that you can ignore. But when you actually research it and think about all the moments that have made you feel uncomfortable, it becomes overwhelmingly clear that One Piece is sexist.

It’s gotten to the point where I’m embarrassed to tell my friends that I watch One Piece, because I know that they’re going to google it to check it out and they’re just going to see (mostly) boobs. I would never buy a figurine of a female character in One Piece because I wouldn’t even be able to look at it. I’m not saying that large boobs don’t exist in real life, but it’s a problem because it’s gotten to the point where every female character has giant boobs. There is barely any diversity between them. And to be honest this isn’t the type of anime I signed up for. The first time I remember feeling uncomfortable was in the Alabasta arc and seeing Miss Doublefinger's outfit. Who would dress like that? I could just write it off to her being a crazy villain. But after that moment the boobs grew bigger in every arc, until after the timeskip when in the manga you couldn’t even tell which female character was speaking because they all looked the same.

Overall I really love One Piece but it is important to acknowledge the flaws in the things you love. It needs to be known that the treatment of female characters in One Piece is unacceptable. While it is true that females can be sexy, they can have huge boobs and they might not always be physically strong, the lack of diversity in One Piece is problematic and encourages the view that women should be objectified. There are many types of women in the world and the creativity in the story of One Piece proves that the storylines and character designs of female characters are just not good enough.

That's not related to what I said there. Luffy directly has Shanks' hat and Roger's desire for One Piece. The name of his crew directly references the bond of him and Shanks and how Shanks passed it on to him.

Jinbe isn't particularly doing anything to help Fishmen become equal to humans. Giving blood to one guy isn't doing that too well. His main role is as an elderly protector to Luffy. If he was always going on about Fisher Tiger and most/all his actions were to continue the will of Otohime, I'd agree. But instead he's basically like a solemn old father figure for Luffy. His original thing when he was first mentioned is that he basically accidentally caused Arlong to be a problem, so even then he'd already passed on ideas and motivations down to a more current gen character.

Jinbe is a tired old man who's just focusing on helping out the current gen, he's not nakama material. He's just a red herring that'll die and the "I'll be a nakama one day" thing is just to make that more painful and poignant.

If you mean the visualisation of memories as a film or a book, that's a common trope that you could probably easily google examples for. I picked it up recently. So... In a few chapters there's a dude who went from random asshole to a superhuman x vampire. Then became able to control people's mind only to reveal he's also able to transform 400 years old corpses into zombies (with their original body). Jinbe is fucking guaranteed at this point. The only thing that could keep him from joining would be him dying, and there's been better times for Oda to pull that twist than right now in the middle of Sanji's drama.

Carrot and Pedro aren't joining. The Minks are already a formal alliance of the Straw Hats like Law is, and the two of them have just been sidekicks to Chopper and Brook respectively. They'll stick around as ally characters for a while but in the end they're guests like the samurai, and neither of them has a particularly strong backstory or motivation to join.

Reiju being the only sibling who gives the slightest shit about Sanji doesn't make her a crew candidate, she's coming off as a Nojiko or Genzo. Pudding just made herself irredeemable as of last chapter, and even if you're deluded enough to think otherwise her fruit power doesn't really work well for a lead character.
