What was the highlight of the season? Was it Buchou's badass sax solo?

It made me realise she pretty much only serves a role in the show as an administrator for the band and it barely even represented her as a musician up to that point. Before that I'm not even sure if, had I been asked, I could say for certain which instrument she played

Yes. Once new first years join she`ll be the key character. She`ll go through character development, cutting off her ribbons, mature and become a cool beuty - supported in her efforts by Natsuki, who will braid her hair and do the management work in the club, while Ribbons inspire the newcommers.

Soon she`ll have own first year following her and calling her Onee-sama, as well she`ll have to kick Reina from the club for being toxic and have Kumiko be replaced as Euphonium, since some new club member is better than her.

This is why IMO a new season without Asuka just isn't the same. She was smart and perseptive. She almos read everyone like a book to a degree. Only one close to being like her was Kumiko. That's why a new MC should be in place. If there is no one as conniving and poker faced as Asuka, Kumiko alone just won't cut it.

The drama between first and 2nd years was the core conflict hinted in season one and this ark was resolution of it - telling us what and how actually happened, and concluding it. Its fine for Mizore`s personal drama, as well for understanding the events that lead club to state it was in S1, including Asuka story and others.

Well Taki did give her his wife's music and said "I think it would be perfect for you". Taki might just be getting rid of his wife's stuff, and Reina at that time just thought he was just giving her some music he had on him, but it's difficult to ignore the potential for that to be seen as the show pointing out how it has some symbolic meaning to it.

Taki's definitely getting rid of it because it brings back painful memories. It's a thing people often instinctively do while grieving.

Asuka's getting rid of it because she doesn't need it. Wanting to be acknowledged by her absent father was the driving force of her reason to even be in the band. It's a goal she's now achieved, now she can move on and play the euphonium for herself, assuming she doesn't just drop it entirely when she goes on to college.
